Badmusic was an indie record label based in Godalming, Surrey, UK, formed in late 1999 as a hobby by Ric Melia. The label was notable for releasing early recordings by Surrey-based rock band Reuben. Badmusic became inactive in 2003 due to a lack of time and money.

The main focus of the label was to discover and assist local bands who deserved more success than they could achieve alone. Music released by the label was covered in the UK music press and featured on BBC Radio One shows including John Peel's show, the Rock Show and the Evening Session.

[edit] Reasons for making the label inactive

There are a number of reasons why the label was stopped:

  • Lack of funding, made worse by extemely slow payment by distribution companies.
  • Lack of time: The label was run by one person who was a student when he founded Badmusic. Now married with children, he doesn't have anywhere near the same level of spare time.
  • Industry politics: For the simple reason that Badmusic was a tiny label, it could only achieve deals with the smaller distribution companies. This essentially meant that records that could have made the UK top 40 singles chart did not because fans simpy couldn't buy the CD in their local shops.
