Bacon butty
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A bacon butty is a form of butty (sandwich) made from bacon and white or brown bread, usually with some form of sauce, such as tomato ketchup or brown sauce. Streaky or back bacon may be used. Bacon butties are an all-day favourite throughout the United Kingdom.
The ideal composition and preparation of a bacon butty is subject to debate (as with the perfect cup of tea). In any case, the bacon is cooked to preference, and placed between two slices of bread. Some may prefer no sauce at all, and this is referred to as a dry bacon butty. The butty or 'sarnie' shown in the picture probably has more than a normal amount of bacon. Also, many people in the UK prefer the bacon to be cooked longer, making it more crispy.
An American alternative to the bacon butty is the BLT (bacon, lettuce and tomato) sandwich.
[edit] Variable components
Each butty contains variable components, such as the following common preferences.
- Bread - White or Brown (or perhaps other varieties i.e. eggy bread)
- Toasted - Yes or No.
- Butter - Yes or No.
- Sauce - Commonly tomato ketchup, or brown sauce (such as HP Sauce).
Alternatively items such as egg, mushrooms, black pudding or sausages (basically any item commonly found in a full English breakfast) can also be added to make the sandwich more substantial.
