[edit] Edits

Hey amigo/a. I noticed that you've been making some edits on articles about Mexican Americans. Thank you for starting the John J. Herrera article. I just wanted to make you aware of some of the policies and guidelines we follow in Wikipedia.

  • On links: except in rare cases, only the first occurrence of a word is linked. That's why I delinked LULAC in the article on Dr. Hector--it was already linked previously in the article. Secondly, the link should go directly to the article you want to link to--that is, it should not be a redirect. For example: [[LULAC]] redirects to [[League of United Latin American Citizens]]. You can also use piped links.
  • On accentuation: I am fully aware of the rules of accentuation in the Spanish language. The problem is that in the United States, many people do not use accents or any other diacritics in Spanish-language names. This is especially true for people and events occurring prior to the Chicano Movement. Adding accents not only forces Wikipedia to redirect when the name is a link, but it is also incorrect in many cases. Please be careful of this.
  • The same is true of the use of double surnames in the United States. Whereas in Mexico Dr. Hector Perez Garcia would be referred to as "Pérez García" without exception, in the U.S. only one surname was used at the time. With few exceptions, the literature about him refers to him as "Dr. Garcia", and the wikipedia article should be consistent with the other literature out there.

The members of WikiProject Mexican-Americans/Chicanos have come up with these conventions. They are stiull up for discussion on the project talkpage. And if you're interested in Mex-Am/Chicano topics, I'd like to invite you to join the project! We are always in need of competent editors.

Thanks for your contributions, --Rockero 18:52, 24 May 2006 (UTC)
