[edit] History
[edit] Production
After wrapping up her role as Deena Jones on the film Dreamgirls, Knowles had "bottled up so many things, so many emotions, so many ideas" but at the same time felt that she "didn't want to do another album like Dangerously In Love because that's boring" that she decided to leave her vacation early to record the album in a timespan of two weeks only, recording three songs a day. She did this without telling her father/manager Mathew Knowles or her record label, Columbia Records. At that time Knowles had booked the whole New York City Sony Studios, simultaneously recording with an "all-star team of producers", including Rodney Jerkins, Rich Harrison, The Neptunes, Stargate, Cameron Wallace, Walter Milsap, and Swizz Beatz. Rapper T.I. also joined the sessions to record a verse for "Upgrade U", but like Lil Wayne he did not make the cut on B’Day.[2][3][4][5]
"Resentment" is a cover of a song originally recorded by Victoria Beckham. The track, which was also covered by Jazmine Sullivan in 2004, appeared on the The Real Beckhams DVD release as a bonus song. It features slightly altered lyrics, and thus a writing credit for Knowles.
"B'Day" was reportedly recorded in less than three weeks in the spring of 2006.
During the year of 2007, Beyonce' will release 5 more songs+music videos that goes along with it from her B'day album. Songs and music videos are as follows: Get me bodied, suga mama, kitty kat, freakum dress, and green light.
[edit] Chart performance
The album debuted at number one on the U.S. Billboard 200 with first week sales of 541,000 copies and at number one on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.[6]. In the UK it peaked at number three upon its release before quickly falling out of the top twenty. After being reduced in price in the Christmas and January sales however, B'day re-entered the top 20 and went on to receive a platinum certificate. According to mediatraffic, B’Day was the twelveth biggest selling album of the 2006 worldwide.[7]
The first single off the album was "Deja Vu", a '70s funk-influenced uptempo track featuring Jay-Z. The song peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and number four on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. "Ring the Alarm", the second single, peaked at number eleven in the Hot 100, and number three in the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. "Irreplaceable" claimed the #1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 for 10 weeks straight. What is rather unexpected is her second B’Day collaboration with Jay-Z, "Upgrade U", climbed up the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, based solely on airplay. Now "Upgrade U" is her fourth single from B'Day. The song has also peaked at number fifty-nine on the Hot 100.[8] Also, "Get Me Bodied" has entered on Hot R&B/HipHop Songs, peaking at #47. "Beautiful Liar", Beyoncé's duet with Shakira is the first single to be released from the rerelease of B'Day. "Beautiful Liar" and "Upgrade U" both premiered on February 28th, on BET's 106 & Park.
B’Day was nominated for five Grammy Awards including: "Best Female R&B Vocal Performance" for "Ring the Alarm", "Best R&B Song" for "Deja Vu", "Best Contemporary R&B Album" (won), "Best Rap/Sung Collaboration" for "Deja Vu", and "Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical" for "Deja Vu" (Freemasons Club Mix - No Rap) (remixed by Russell Small and James Wiltshire). It won "Best Contemporary R&B Album".
