Bâlc of Moldavia

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bâlc (or Balc) was a Voivode ruling over the lands of what was to become Moldavia in 1359, succeeding his father, Sas, the son of the first ruler of the country. He managed to rule the country for only one year before being disposed by another Voivode from Maramureş, Bogdan.

After being defeated by Bogdan I, Bâlc left Moldavia and retreated to Maramureş where, in 1365, the king of Hungary awarded him and his cousins - Drag (or Dragoş), Dragomir and Ştefan - the lands Bogdan I used to hold and the title of Maramureş Voivodes. Bâlc and Drag ruled Maramureş until 1395, when Bâlc died after having been awarded the titles of Count of Szatmár (around what is today the city of Satu Mare) and of the Szekelys. Drag (Dragoş) is ancestor of the Dragfi Hungarian aristocracy family.
