Azhvanchery Thamprakkal

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Azhvanchery Raman Thamprakkal is considered by many as the one of the foremost head of the religious sect of Namboothiris, high caste Hindu Brahmins of Kerala.

Religious elders approach him in settling disputes regarding temple rites. He stays with his family at the Azhvanchery Mana, an ancestral house, in Athavanadu, which is 2 kilometers north of Thirunavaya, in Malappuram district of Kerala, India.

According to tradition only the eldest son is allowed to marry, he is called 'Raman'. The others have to take up sanyasam renunciation.

Athavanadu (pronounced aa-tha-va-naadu) is the combination of the words: Azhvanchery Thamprakkal Vazhum (where they live) Naadu (Town). There are some photos of that old illam (house) at http://www.namboothiri.com/articles/illam-photos.htm
