[edit] Etymology

Azcárraga (spelled Azkarraga in modern Basque orthography) derives from the Basque word azkar meaning "maple", and the suffix -aga meaning "place, abundance" [1]; derivations with this suffix are common in Basque surnames. Another surname with a similar origin and meaning is Azcarreta [2], from the same root but with the ending -eta, another common Basque suffix meaning "abundance, plurality".
