[edit] Stylistic issues

I think the most flexible representation of a reference is this:

Duck and Cover 1978

I.e., without any intervening punctuation. Thereby, the reference can be used in several contexts:

Parenthetically
It is know that all shrumps are also quigloids (Duck and Cover 1978).
In a footnote
13. ^ Duck and Cover 1978.
With page numbers
Duck and Cover 1978:147–149
Duck and Cover 1978, 147–149
In body text
Duck and Cover 1978 pointed out that all shrumps are also quigloids.

...without introducing extra markup or different templates to produce one style or the other.

(The obvious alternatives are Duck and Cover (1978) or Duck and Cover, 1978, which are less flexible.

How difficult would it be to make two additional templates to do those two alternative formats? Maybe ParenAYRef and CommaAYRef? --Rikurzhen 09:14, August 3, 2005 (UTC)
How difficult? Trivial. I just don't like instruction creep or having too many templates floating around that basically do the same thing. Note that the fact that references are underlined and have a different colour (because they are hyperlinks) already tie them together typographically much more than they would in printed material. But let me set up your proposed templates so that you can play around with them. We are still in the "prototyping phase" of development, and I will happily pander to the whims of my user base. The templates should be up and running within the next 60 seconds. Arbor 09:24, 3 August 2005 (UTC)
OK, done it. I used the names "A(Y)ref" and "A,Yref" because it seemed cooler that way. I have no idea if that works. Arbor 09:28, 3 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Curiosity

Just out of curiosity, what does "AY" stand for? Dd2 22:18, 29 July 2005 (UTC)

Author–Year. Any other suggestion is welcome (the simple template name "ref" has already been taken). Maybe the name should be "far ref" or "off-page-ref" or "refPageRef" or something like that, indicating that the primary cleverness of this template is to facilitate references to another page with collected references.Arbor 20:15, 30 July 2005 (UTC)
