Ayr railway station serves the town of Ayr, South Ayrshire, Scotland. The station is managed by First ScotRail and is on the Ayrshire Coast Line 67 km (41½ miles) south east of Glasgow Central railway station. The railway station is located beside Burns Statue Square in Ayr.

[edit] Services

The station has an excellent daily half-hourly service to Glasgow Central except Sundays during the winter timetable (Oct-May) where an hourly service is operates.

The service from Ayr to Glasgow Central is one of the busiest on the network in Scotland and can suffer with serious overcrowding in peak times. To alleviate this, First ScotRail in June 2005 extended trains on the line to 6 cars where possible between 0643 and 1813 on weekdays from Ayr. The expansion of low-cost carrier Ryanair from Glasgow Prestwick Airport is the main reason behind the soaring passenger numbers on the Glasgow - Ayr route.

There are also less frequent services from Ayr to Girvan, Stranraer, Kilmarnock and Newcastle in England.

[edit] Information

According to the First ScotRail website, Ayr is to receive Automatic Ticket Barriers in Winter 2006/07 as part of the company's revenue protection policy.

Ayr used to have a daily London Euston service which ran via Barassie to the G&SW line. The service was dropped in the early 1990s due to restructuring of BR timetables.

Ayr has also one of 7 remaining ticket offices on the Ayr to Glasgow Central line, the others being Prestwick Town, Irvine, Kilwinning, Johnstone, Paisley Gilmour Street and Glasgow Central.
