Axel and Eigil Axgil

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Axel and Eigil Axgil were the first gay couple to enter into a civil union anywhere in the world following Denmark's legalisation of same-sex partnership registration in 1989.

Their ceremony took place in Copenhagen on 1 October 1989, accompanied by worldwide media attention.

The couple had been partners for 40 years prior to this. The Axgils adopted that surname in 1957 (after being jailed for gay rights activism) by combining parts of their respective first names. Their original names were Eigil Eskildsen and Axel Lundahl-Madsen. Their marriage lasted a further 6 years, ended by Eigil's death on September 22, 1995 at the age of 73.
