Grozny OMON ambush was the July 4, 2005 attack by the Chechen rebel fighters armed with assault rifles, grenade launchers and rocket propelled grenades on a motorized column of the GRU Spetsnaz 54607 Brigade from Tambov, composed of several trucks and one armoured personnel carrier.

The attack killing at least seven servicemen and wounding as many as 25 others, according to the Russian sources. [1]

Separatist websites announced the attack was a "meticulously planned act of revenge" for the death of the rebel leader Abdul-Halim Sadulayev. They said "near 50" Russians were killed or wounded, including at least 20 dead, and that they themselves suffered no casualties. [2]

On the same day, Russian President Vladimir Putin said the term "combat operations" can no longer be used with regards to Chechnya: "The army in Chechnya is in its barracks, the troops are quartered on a permanent basis and are doing the same thing they do in other Russian territories."
