Avital

Avital, a small moshav (communal agriculture settlement) in Regional council (Israel) of Gilboa. Avital was the first moshav in the Taanachim region.

It is situated 10 km. south of Afula. It was founded in 1953 by immigrants from Iran, Turkey and Kurdistan as a part of the moshavim party (that has today 448 moshavim). The new immigrants had no experience in agriculture and a lot of help was given to them.

The population is 440 (2006).

It derives its name from the Bible, to mark the blessing of the dew (tal in Hebrew) instead of David's curse in book Samuel II - Chapter 1 verse 21 "O mountains of Gilboa, let there be no dew nor rain upon you, nor shall you be fields of heave offerings, for there the shield of the mighty was rejected, Saul's shield was as though not anointed with oil."

Its first name was Taanach A.
