Aviazione Ausiliara per l´Esercito
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Aviazione Ausiliara per l´Esercito (A.A.E.) (Italian Army Air Corps) was the air branch of the Italian Army during World War II. It performed functions comparable to the United States Army Air Corps, the Japanese IJAAF and the German Luftwaffe. Before 1933 the unit was called the 'Corpo Aeronautico Militare' (Military Aeronautical Corps). It was disbanded in 1943 following Italy's surrender to the Allied Powers.
The unit provided close air support for land forces, reconnaissance and transport, while dive bombing, heavy bombing and fighter support was provided by regular Regia Aeronautica units. The A.A.E. was attached to regular army units on combat fronts and in occupied territories. Airborne troop support services was provided by Regia Aeronautica.
The A.A.E. used the same type of aircraft as other parts of Regia Aeronautica and remained in close collaboration with squadrons with the same aircraft type.
