[edit] Welcome

Hello, welcome to Wikipedia.

Here are some tasks you can do:

You might find these links helpful in creating new pages or helping with the above tasks: How to edit a page, How to write a great article, Naming conventions, Manual of Style. You should read our policies at some point too.

If you have any questions, see the help pages, add a question to the village pump or ask me on my talk page. I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian!

  • You can sign your name using three tildes, like this: ~~~. If you use four, you can add a datestamp too.
  • If you ever think a page or image should be deleted, please list it at the votes for deletion page. There is also a votes for undeletion page if you want to retrieve something that you think should not have been deleted.

Again, welcome! - UtherSRG 15:07, 29 Mar 2004 (UTC)

[edit] The Moody Blues

Are you sure your recent edit of The Moody Blues ([1]) is entirely fair? Given that this was a band that enjoyed most of its popularity in the UK and the US, US-centered phrasing is not entirely inappropriate (at the very least, the American POV should be given some heed). I agree, however, that the reference to the so-called British Invasion belongs in the body of the article, not in its first paragraph. -- Itai 17:45, 3 Apr 2004 (UTC)

I've replied on the Moody Blues talk page 2. --Auximines 09:08, 7 Apr 2004 (UTC)

I replied about Jimmy White on my talk page. Pete/Pcb21 (talk) 19:27, 23 Apr 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Re: Ken Doherty (engineer)

He went through a phase a few months back of receiving a lot of coverage, however I think it has all died down and he has probably receded to being "non-famous"

[edit] Infoboxes for snooker players

Thanks for the effort that you put into creating the infoboxes for all of those snooker players. However, they could probably look alot better if you added a little colour to them (eg: some shade of green). A very good page which lists loads of examples of infoboxes can be found at Infoboxes. [edit] Snooker articles

Nice work on all the Snooker articles. Burgundavia 08:48, 1 Jun 2004 (UTC)

  • I frequently watch New Pages so I see lots of dross going by. It is nice to see a page that I have to do nothing to. Burgundavia 08:55, 1 Jun 2004 (UTC)
    • Still at it I see. When is this epic project of yours going to be done? Burgundavia 09:24, 2 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Sorry for not getting back to you before about the categorisation stuff. I was just using the Nigel Bond page as a test to see if I could get the snooker players category to format properly. If you are interested there as an in-depth article on this subject at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Categorization ChicXulub 22:48, 5 Jun 2004 (UTC)

I'm sure we've made a mistake with the nationalities of many of the snooker players. All of the people who come from England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland should have a British nationality (which should link to the United Kingdom). ChicXulub 14:52, 20 Jun 2004 (UTC)

[edit] John Williams

With limited apology, I deleted the Snooker referee from the disambiguation page for John Williams, - I'm trying to create at least a biographic stub for each name listed. If you've got enough info, then create the page John Williams (snooker) then we can add him back. Thanks... Lou I 22:50, 4 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Thanks for the comments on my infobox. Burgundavia 03:37, Jun 17, 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Photos

Could you say which license you are uploading photos under - whether they are GFDL, Public Domian etc. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for a list. Thanks. Secretlondon 08:38, 24 Jun 2004 (UTC)

[edit] England expects

My source was the Historical Maritime Society. Of course, they may be wrong as well - I'll have a look next time I'm in Trafalgar Square. --ALargeElk | Talk 09:17, 5 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Excellent work with the flags. One question - is Popham 8 just plain white? If so, perhaps it might be better to put a hairline border round it - on a white background, it doesn't show up.--ALargeElk | Talk 11:22, 6 Aug 2004 (UTC)

[edit] List of number one hits (UK)

The info is freely available in lots of places. Here's a few:

I use everyhit as my main source. Bonalaw 10:30, 11 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Go ahead. I'll return to the list in due course, but there's only so much of it I can cope with typing at a time, so I'd be quite glad if someone else would do a bit! Bonalaw 10:50, 11 Aug 2004 (UTC)
Wow! Thanks a lot for your work on that. I've looked over the pages and made a few changes (mainly splitting collaborations so each collaborator has a link to their own page). I'm leaving it to you to cut & paste as I don't want to steal your credit. Bonalaw 18:05, 11 Aug 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Welwyn Garden City grammar

Good to see someone is on the ball regarding grammar.

[edit] On Japan and related stuff

The user 4.23.83.100 is trolling, and he has been at it for over three days without any change in his behavior. I was wondering if we can block his IP. He is doing it from a static IP, Evergreen Medical Group Inc. EMG-83-16 (NET-4-23-83-0-1) 4.23.83.0 - 4.23.83.255 and a company can probably do without the wikipedia. Any ideas on how to do it?

[edit] Mark Williams disambiguation

There are quite a lot of people in the world called Mark Williams. Any objections to me creating a disambiguation page and redirecting all the snooker links to a page like Mark Williams (snooker player)? --The Brain of Morbius 07:29, 18 Oct 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Snooker

I take issue with you restoring faulty information concerning the circumstances when a free ball is allowed. In particular, I'm referring to this edit. -- Dissident (Talk) 01:41, 2 Dec 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Article Licensing

Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 1000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:

To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" template into their user page, but there are other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:

Option 1
I agree to multi-license all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

OR

Option 2
I agree to multi-license all my contributions to any U.S. state, county, or city article as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" with "MultiLicensePD". If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know what you think at my talk page. It's important to know either way so no one keeps asking. -- Ram-Man (comment| talk)

[edit] Unverified image

Thanks for uploading the image

I notice it currently doesn't have an image copyright tag. Could you add one to let us know its copyright status? (You can use gfdl if you release it under the GFDL, or fairuse if you claim fair use, etc.) If you don't know what any of this means, just let me know where you got the image and I'll tag it for you. Thanks, Kbh3rd 04:03, 21 Jan 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Cat Stevens external links - silly?

Can I ask why you think my external links (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Cat_Stevens&diff=0&oldid=9565618) were, in your opinion, silly? I looked up this article specifically to find out about Cats in the Cradle and, not finding the answer on Wikipedia, had to find out via Google. This misattribution is common, and a link (Did Cat Stevens sing/write "Cat's in the Cradle?") to further info would, in at least my opinion, be useful. I now realise that the second link to further info about Cats in the Cradle (Behind the Song: Cat's in the Cradle) was not relevant, and ought to have been reverted, but this irrelevence (silly?) criteria does not apply to the first link IMO. -- Slark

Cat Stevens wrote and sang dozens of songs. Why have a link regarding a song he didn't write? Anyway, catstevens.com is already linked. --Auximines 19:53, 24 Jan 2005 (UTC)

[edit] More Cat Stevens

I noticed you've edited and dealt with some issues regarding the Cat Stevens article in the past, and thought that the peer review I started might interest you. I'm going to try to get the article to featured status, and hopefully you can offer up some comments or suggestions here. Thanks in advance, Mrtea (talk) 17:53, 11 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Twelve Level Cap and Rank System

At best, I think both are acceptable (although I suspect that rei is only becoming popular because most people nowadays only think of rei when they see that kanji.) For example, see this 3. If you are studying Japanese in addition to Japanese history, you will quickly learn that there are often several accepted pronunciations for a lot of older terms and names. For example, I routinely see both Umayado and Umayato for Shotoku Taishi's given name. Anyway, if you want to add rei, that's probably okay, but please do not delete rai.-Jefu 07:33, 13 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Strachan Open

Was just browsing here, and it contains the phrase "Most of the top sixteen players did bother to enter." Is this a typo that should be "did not bother", or do you mean "most of the top sixteen players entered nonetheless" ? Could you maybe clarify it please? Smb1001 18:56, 30 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Remove link to insecure page?

Auximines, why did you remove my post ("Happy holiday everyone!")? You said, in the edit summary, that it was because I linked to an insecure page. But how is http://www.huumor.com/joke_3517 "insecure"? (It's OK--my post was not a question anyways. I'm just curious about how that joke page is "insecure".) --Bowlhover 00:25, 13 November 2006 (UTC)

It popped up several windows on my PC and attempted to download some malware. Fortunately my anti-virus software stopped it. I'd avoid that site if I were you. --Auximines 09:51, 13 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Re: Hidenokuni and other sumo bits

I might activate that list at some time in the next week or so, but I haven't worked on it in a while (and I've missed the coverage of the last few basho). There's a bit on Nathan Strange here [4]. There's very little else on him, unfortunately ... and his short participation in the sumo world probably explains that well. -- Miwa * talk * contribs ^_^ 02:36, 20 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Sumo-bio-stub

Hi - it has come to our notice that you have recently created a new stub type. As it clearly states at WP:STUB, at the top of most stub categories, on the template page for new Wikiprojects and in many other places on Wikipedia, new stub types should be proposed prior to creation at Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Proposals, in order to check whether the new stub type is already covered by existing stub types, whether it is named according to stub naming guidelines, whether it reaches the standard threshold for creation of a new stub type, whether it crosses existing stub type hierarchies, and whether better use could be made of a WikiProject-specific talk page template.

In the case of your new stub type, it is well named and sensible, but there is no indication that it will reach the standard threshold for creation of a new stub type. Your new stub type is currently listed at WP:WSS/D - please feel free to make any comments there about it. And please, in future, propose new stub types first! Grutness...wha? 23:10, 24 January 2007 (UTC)
