Removing interlanguage links

Since upgrading to 3.1.0.0 and using the CFD plugin, AWB has occasionally removed interlanguage links at the same time as categories e.g. [2] [3] [4] [5]. I have general fixes turned off. the wub "?!" 13:47, 1 February 2007 (UTC)

Searching article source

I just started with AWB the other day, so please forgive me if this question is too obvious. Is there a way to search the source of many articles for text that would not appear in a Wiki or Google search (for example, to correct spacing of <ref> tags)? -- Robert See Hear Speak 09:48, 11 February 2007 (UTC)

To clarify a little, I mean is there a way to make a list of articles with a certain phrase in their source. -- Robert See Hear Speak 10:29, 11 February 2007 (UTC)
Yes, try downloading a database dump. —METS501 (talk) 14:49, 11 February 2007 (UTC)

Help please

I want to use AWB to replace [[Category:Internet domains]] with [[Category:Internet domains|Page name without dot]] in the catalan wikipedia. With AWB i can do it? Thanks, ca:User:Albertsab. Sorry, i have a very little level of english

  • just enter into find and replace: FIND:[[Category:Internet domains]] REPLACE:[[Category:Internet domains|Page name without dot]], all options=empty, it just replaces the string
    • I think that won't work, he means that the problem lies with the "dot"-removal Dryke 16:56, 12 February 2007 (UTC)

Advanced search and replace questions

I started using AWB 2 days ago and am loving it, but there are several things I haven't been able to figure out.

1. Is there a way to search throughout all the archives of this talk page to see if my questions have already been answered?

I am searching for pages that contain the misspelling "saxaphone".

2. Is there a page somewhere that gives detailed help information and/or explanations of the use of the advanced search and replace functions? I'm looking for a definition of "subrule" an an explanation of the "if" tab.

See m:MWiki-Browser. --Ligulem 18:46, 3 February 2007 (UTC)

Multiline / Singleline (regular expressions)?

3. In the Advanced Search and Replace ("Replace Special" window), what do the terms Multiline and Singleline mean? I checked m:MWiki-Browser - it refers to those terms, but does not explain them.

How to add [[ and ]] to a word but only when it's not there already

5. When I find "saxaphone" I want to change it to "[[saxophone]]". I tried doing this, but the problem is that some cases of "saxaphone" were already surrounded by double-brackets, so the result is [[[[saxophone]]]]. (In plain English, what I want to do is: replace "saxaphone" with "[[saxophone]]", unless "saxaphone" already has brackets around it, in which case replace it with "saxophone".)

I thought I could solve this by searching for [[saxaphone]] and replacing it with [[saxophone]] , but when I tried that as a Find string in Advanced Find and Replace, it was a disaster (finding every ocurrence of dobule-bracket in the article!) Is the slash ( / ) character the answer? If so, do I need to search for /[/[ ? Or do I need to set up a Subrule?

Thanks for any help, and apologies if these are questions that have been asked and answered before. —SaxTeacher (talk) 23:12, 1 February 2007 (UTC)

How about searching for " saxaphone " and replacing it with " [[saxophone]] "? --After Midnight 0001 03:04, 2 February 2007 (UTC)
I can do that, but much of the time, the word has some punctuation around it (a comma or period) or appears in (parentheses). —SaxTeacher (talk) 14:38, 2 February 2007 (UTC)
simply search for [[saxaphone]] and replace with saxaphone then search for saxaphone and replace with [[saxaphone]] ,this can be done in one go as the find and replace is done in order (Gnevin 14:47, 2 February 2007 (UTC))
Note this wont work with piped links (Gnevin 14:50, 2 February 2007 (UTC))
Update for piped links add a final add and replace of [[[[saxaphone]] and replace with [[sexaphone —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Gnevin (talkcontribs) 15:02, 2 February 2007 (UTC).
Perhaps this has already been fixed, but you could regex this to make it easier. [^\[]saxophone[^\]] would match any instance that doesn't have brackets before and after it. It wouldn't be thrown off by punctuation or spaces, and any bracketed instances would be skipped. thadius856talk|airports|neutrality 20:17, 5 February 2007 (UTC)

Here's a different approach which might work (I haven't rried it in this case but in a similar situation).

  1. do a replace of "saxaphone" → "[[saxophone]]"
  2. do another replace of "[[[[" → "[[""
  3. and another of "]]]]" → "]]"

What you're effectively doing is allowing the 4 brackets to be put in then running a separate replace to remove them if they do happen to get put in. JAXHERE | Talk 15:00, 12 February 2007 (UTC)

Alternatively search for ([^[])(Saxahpone) and replace with $1[[Saxophone]]. But there should not be lots of links to the same article close together. Rich Farmbrough, 16:05 12 February 2007 (GMT).

AWB hangs on XP shutdown

I am generally someone who doesn't close all my programs before i turn off my pc .I just go to shut down and let windows close them ,now AWB always hangs when i do this and it doesn't even do like other programs and automatically end process after 10 seconds it just stops the entire shut down process till I click end now.

Has anyone else experienced this ? (Gnevin 12:17, 7 February 2007 (UTC))

Shutdown provokes an "are you sure" dialogue box IIRC. Rich Farmbrough, 16:12 12 February 2007 (GMT).

highlighting changes

  • now whole paragraph is highlighted in preview if a small change is done there, FireFox has a nice mechanism to highlight founded text, maybe it could be applied in AWB to highlight changes that are done, to be better visible --84.234.42.68 13:23, 10 February 2007 (UTC)
  • i request for a regex to change first small letter into [[image: [[category: and =(a|b|c|...) to big letter, if this is possible --84.234.42.68 14:25, 10 February 2007 (UTC)
Sorry, I can't really understand your first comment and the "=(a|b|c|...)" part of your second comment. Can you clarify? —METS501 (talk) 03:20, 11 February 2007 (UTC)
I think he means that when showing a diff when it's ready to save, AWB highlights the entire paragraph of the diff, and it would be better if it highlighted only the change (in the manner that FireFox does when searching a page). However, it also highlights the exact change in red, so I don't see the problem. And I have no idea what his 2nd comment means. -- Robert See Hear Speak 10:06, 11 February 2007 (UTC)
when I do a small change it's a problem to find this red text when WHOLE paragraph is highlighted, as you know FireFox highlights only the background of the searched text so it's clear and i dont need to get my eyes close to the screen, "=(a|b|c|...)" - I want to change =blabla= to =Blabla=, =history of USA= to =History of USA= etc., I masked first small letter in the section name, now you understand? --84.234.42.68 20:59, 11 February 2007 (UTC)
a little suggestion, maybe an ignoring option (in "find and replace") should ignore \[\[:?image, not only \[\[image ? and I insist to not ignore the description of the image --84.234.42.68 20:59, 11 February 2007 (UTC)

Interesting construction

A user complained that his clever construction which ([[construction ]]which ) works like that, is broken by AWB. Should AWB allow for it, or is it "too clever", so that it will be broken by other editors and should be changed to pipe syntax? Rich Farmbrough, 16:15 12 February 2007 (GMT).

AWB doesnt seem to do that when i use it , also that sort of pipe links are useful for things like All-Ireland Senior Football Championship final (Gnevin 16:20, 12 February 2007 (UTC))

Bug with category removal

I'm using AWB to remove some category from it.wiki. I used the command "Remove Category:" of the "More..." menu.
When there is no blank line between the category and the first interwiki, AWB remove the first interwiki too.--Moroboshi 23:15, 12 February 2007 (UTC)

Please file this in the /Bugs subpage. Thanks. —METS501 (talk) 02:15, 13 February 2007 (UTC)
Actually, I'm not having this problem. Do you have the latest version? —METS501 (talk) 02:40, 13 February 2007 (UTC)
Opsss. moved the discussion in the bugs subpage. I added an example - apparently I was wrong and the cause is not tre presence/absence of a blank line.--Moroboshi 12:03, 13 February 2007 (UTC)

Partial Version

I know that some people would like to have that kind of a tool. All features would not be needed and features could be taken out. Only people with strongly positive edits would be allowed to use. I don't know. It's just a thought but I don't really have that much time on my hands so I would like something like it. Redskunk 04:35, 6 February 2007 (UTC)

I don't quite get what you're saying. Can you clarify? —Mets501 (talk) 01:42, 9 February 2007 (UTC)
I know there are some people that want to help wikipedia but are discouraged by the lack of software to help them. I thought if you developed a kind of "lite" version that gave a few features, but lacked the power of repetitive edits of AWB. Redskunk 04:30, 10 February 2007 (UTC)
There are javascripts that are good for that sort of thing. Rich Farmbrough, 16:08 12 February 2007 (GMT).
Yeah, install popups for example. Put this on your monobook, and use firefox Reedy Boy 21:51, 16 February 2007 (UTC)

Cool, Cheers for Fixing it. On the latest SVN commit, when i try to load pages/categories, i get an error of 'The 'img' start tag on line 30 does not match the end tag of 'a'. Line 30, position 60 - Is this something on the wiki? Reedy Boy 12:14, 10 February 2007 (UTC)
Is this on Wikipedia, or on custom wikis? Do you have an example? —METS501 (talk) 03:15, 11 February 2007 (UTC)
This one was on the Hak.5 Wiki Reedy Boy 12:18, 11 February 2007 (UTC)
It is a problem with their wiki. You should write to them about that to remind them that in XHTML, all <img> tags must either end with a </img> tag directly following or the <img> tag must have a forward slash at the end (<img src="..." />). —METS501 (talk) 14:44, 11 February 2007 (UTC)

To save you having to sign up, if you do any SVN commits for this, give me a shout on here or my talk, and i'll download and try it - Thanks =) Reedy Boy 12:14, 11 February 2007 (UTC)
Well, I signed up to see anyway, and it looks like that there's no reliable way to get the login status for those two wikis. Both of them don't pass the wgUserName variable, so there's no way of checking whether a user is logged in. Have any other suggestions? —METS501 (talk) 14:45, 11 February 2007 (UTC)
Unless theres a way to get round the AWB login on each of them? Ie, if it is a custom wiki, therefore not following the AWB userlist, there is an option to override the logged in status...? So, it would still be loggedin, and the edits would be attributed to you...? Reedy Boy 15:43, 11 February 2007 (UTC)
I could, but I think that might have too much potential for abuse. It would allow people with dynamic IP's to edit forever without being blocked. If you have a specific Wiki in mind, I can email you a new version of Variables.cs that you could compile with the rest of the code so that you could use AWB there without having to log in. —METS501 (talk) 15:47, 11 February 2007 (UTC)
Well, at the moment, it is just those 2 wiki's... If you wouldnt mind, that'd be good =) My Email is authentisicated with Wikipedia, so you should be ok to use that! Reedy Boy 16:13, 11 February 2007 (UTC)
Had chance to look at this Mets? =) Reedy Boy 20:45, 13 February 2007 (UTC)

I just checked my spam box on my isp's mail server. The other, and todays had been marked as spam. Lol - Thankyou!! See how it goes! Reedy Boy 21:00, 13 February 2007 (UTC)
No problem :-). —METS501 (talk) 21:01, 13 February 2007 (UTC)
Just noticed an annoying bug on the custom wiki link text box. If the user doesnt put a / on the end, it doesnt like it. Could you add to the regex for that bit, so that if there isnt the / on the end, it adds it to try it? Reedy Boy 20:49, 13 February 2007 (UTC)
Done We really need another version, but MaxSem's not around. I need to become an admin, not just a developer, so I can release a new version. —METS501 (talk) 21:01, 13 February 2007 (UTC)

2 More requests if you would be so kind Mets.

  1. Change the text box for custom wiki to say a combo? And then have it save the multiple links on save settings - i noticed it will save 1, but multiple would be good, then load these for selection with AWB.
  2. If there isnt a typo page on the custom wiki on Regextypofix enabling, offer to load from en.wiki? =)

Oh, just noticed another problem. When regextypofix is enabled and saved as default settings, on loading, the link is like http://www.hak5.org/wiki//wiki/Hak5:AutoWikiBrowser/Typos .... Some duplication i think? But it does correct typo's

Reedy Boy 10:25, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

Just looking at the RegEx Code

 string text = Tools.GetArticleText(Variables.Namespaces[4] + "AutoWikiBrowser/Typos");

So that will load the page..

If we wanted to tell it to load say, en.wiki regextypo, as the other article doesnt exist, so text still = ""

if (!(text != ""))
                {
                    text = Tools.GetArticleText("");
                }

Just what needs to go in there... Reedy Boy 13:22, 17 February 2007 (UTC)

Put the multiple links on the Feature request. Reedy Boy 22:04, 20 February 2007 (UTC)

Arabic Wikipedia

We sysops in Arabic Wikipedia have created a page for users and BOTs that can use AWB and it's located at ar:ويكيبيديا:قائمة الويكيبيديون المسموح لهم باستخدام الأوتو ويكي براوزر so we hope it works for the ِArabic Wikipedia and here is a prove that I am a sysop there [6](protct log) Menasim( discuss | ) 19:01, 11 February 2007 (UTC)

I will add ar.wiki to the dropdown list and enable that checkpage, I just need a few things:
  1. A list of all namespaces.
  2. A string to use in place of "using AWB" (i.e. a string that will be appended to edit summaries and that contains a link to AWB.
You may have some problems with the right-to-left stuff, but you can let me know how it goes and I'll do my best to fix it. —METS501 (talk) 02:14, 13 February 2007 (UTC)
Ok thank you the list of name spaces as sorted in the recent changes page(without all):

  13. مساعدة
  14. نقاش المساعدة
  15. تصنيف
  16. نقاش التصنيف
  17. بوابة
  18. نقاش البوابة

and the translation of that string with nowiki (using AWB) is "باستخدام [[وب:AWB|الأوتو ويكي براوزر]]"(you might have problem copying it becuse it's RTL and there are LTR letters inside) Menasim( discuss | ) 10:13, 13 February 2007 (UTC)

New version help

Hi I was told that I needed to update to a new version last night. Having downloaded the new version I cant login. Can anyone help please? Pit-yacker 16:48, 16 February 2007 (UTC)

Suggest you log in using I.E. and "remember me", then fire up AWB. (Also use your task manager to check AWB has actually closed down first.) Rich Farmbrough, 16:58 16 February 2007 (GMT).
Have cleared IE's cache, rebooted and then logged back into Wikipedia (with remember me) in IE. However, when I try to log in to AWB I just repeatedly get the following error message:

"You are not logged in. The logon Screen will now load, enter your name and password, click "Log In", wait for it to complete, then start the process again. In future you can make sure this won't happen by logging into Wikipedia using Microsoft Internet Explorer

However, I am connected to the net (I'm writing this). Any suggestions to what might be wrong? Pit-yacker 21:12, 16 February 2007 (UTC)

Find and Replace question

Hi. I don't know exactly how to explain my question in general terms, so I'll just say what I want to do: I'm trying to clean up usage of the <ref> element, for example when the ref is inside a sentence instead of outside the period, like this[1]. To do that, I have to find any instance of "<ref name="####">########</ref>." and replace it with ".<ref name="####">########</ref>" while ignoring everything that I just represented above by a number sign. How do I do that? -- Robert See Hear Speak 22:58, 22 February 2007 (UTC)

Coincidentally enough, that's enabled by default in the general fixes of the most recent version. Try downloading 3.1.1.1 with general fixes on, and you should see it in action. —METS501 (talk) 23:17, 22 February 2007 (UTC)

Strange Removal

Why was a category removed in this diff? --TeckWiz ParlateContribs@ 21:51, 25 February 2007 (UTC)

Not sure, maybe just a glitch... Just quickly running AWB through the category that was removed, and its not wanting to remove them on any other article....

You are supposed to check edits before you commit them....

Reedy Boy 22:14, 25 February 2007 (UTC)

Yes. I did check it. And I saved it just so I could show the diff. Then I added it back on, at least I thought I did. --TeckWiz ParlateContribs@ 22:33, 25 February 2007 (UTC)
    • It was removed because it was a duplicate. It is a general fix. Any category which appears twice in the list is removed. --After Midnight 0001 22:58, 25 February 2007 (UTC)
Yup, After Midnight, your right. I should really check stuff properly!! Reedy Boy 14:37, 26 February 2007 (UTC)

Automatic

If I wanted to use AutoWikiBrowser to go through a category of 9,000 user talks in, and use it to find and replace the cat with [[Category:WelcomeBotResearch|{{subst:BASEPAGENAME}}]], how would I set it to automatically submit, and would I need bot approval for a one time thing? --TeckWiz ParlateContribs@ 01:35, 27 February 2007 (UTC)

You need bot approval. Happy Editing by Snowolf(talk)CONCOI on 01:41, 27 February 2007 (UTC)
Okay. But after approval, how do I get it to autosave? --TeckWiz ParlateContribs@ 01:56, 27 February 2007 (UTC)
The function is already include in AWB, but you can use it only if you're an approved bot. Happy Editing by Snowolf(talk)CONCOI on 02:07, 27 February 2007 (UTC)
Oh. Then I will submit a bot request. Thanks. --TeckWiz ParlateContribs@ 02:09, 27 February 2007 (UTC)
And then, your bot must be in the bot section in the awb checklist. Alphachimp tends to do most of the approvals, and if its a bot, he waits forthe Bot approval group to approve, and he'll add it to the bot section for you =) Reedy Boy 09:48, 27 February 2007 (UTC)
