Talk:Australian International School Hong Kong

[edit] Suggested edits

Rather than start or continue an edit war, I'm suggesting the following changes here to encourage discussion and, maybe, consensus before being acted upon.

School System: A listing of actual term dates is really neither important nor interesting enough to be included. As a compromise I suggest the following text:

The school follows a southern hemisphere custom where school year starts in February and ends in mid December. Monday to Friday are school days. Unlike at other Hong Kong local schools there are four term breaks during the school year, usually in April, July and October.

Former Prominent Students: Are there any actual former prominent students as opposed to students with prominent parents? If not, this section needs to go.

External links: The school's intranet site is not an appropriate link as it can't be accessed by most people who are likely to read the article.

Given the apparent lack of disagreeement I've amended the article as above - Gimboid13 23:19, 7 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Capitalisation of headings

According to Wikipedia:Manual of Style (headings) only the first letter of the first word and any proper nouns in headings should be capitalised. The rest should be in lower case. - Gimboid13 00:56, 21 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Staff

I think the website needs teacher profiles so we know where teachers are coming from etc. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 59.167.247.2 (talkcontribs).

According to discussion on Wikipedia:WikiProject Schools the convention for inclusion of information about school staff is much the same as that for notable alumni. Administration (headmaster/principal) type staff can be named, but otherwise, they should only be included if they have their own article or if they meet WP:BIO requirements.
I've removed the Staff and Religion sections as it did not comply with Wikipedia's Verifiability and Neutral point of view requirements. If verifiable sources can be obtained for any of this information it may be worth restoring. Since the school has no religious affiliation I see no reason why any lack of emphasis on 'spiritual development' should be noteworthy. Gimboid13 10:53, 28 September 2006 (UTC)
Well may I say that this is censorship in its highest form. What was wriitten was factual about staff, and I would think that anyone wanting information about a school wants information about its teachers. No names were mentioned. It is concerning that information is being censored in a biased manner, which goes against the policies of the organisation.
Many parents want a school to contribute to the total development of their child, so commenting on spiritual programs is vital information. Many non religious schools offer spiritual programs.
Interesting how Wiki actually operates as opposed to what it says about how it operates. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 59.167.247.2 (talkcontribs).
Please read the references in my previous post. If you can cite verifiable sources for any of the information I've removed you're welcome to restore it. Keep in mind though that this is an encyclopedia article, not a prospectus or a forum for pursuing grievances against the school's recruitment practices. Gimboid13 19:53, 29 September 2006 (UTC)

One factor we can use to judge any school is the quality of its teachers.

There was only one member on the interview panel when this school interviewed teachers in Australia in 2006 for 2007. Many education experts would agree that this cannot guarantee the best teachers are selected, as it may lead to subjective selections. It's concerning that the school did not maximise resources to conduct interviews of a higher standard.

There is no information about the experience of the teachers on the website. What type of experience have they had in Australia? Internationally? Sure this takes time but time is needed to produce a top quality website.

I think communication at the school is not the best. I was seeking information about the Head of School earlier this year (2006) and found out that the Head of School left early in 2006. Seemed like a sudden departure. Then for the rest of the year I have not been able to access a Head of School. Does it take nearly a year to search for a Head of School? My concerns related to the school functioning without a Head of School. All these deatails are so important when parents are trying to choose a school in an offshore location. The gaps add unnecessary stress to an already challenging experience.
