- 1809 - Lachlan Macquarie is officially appointed Governor of New South Wales, caretaker William Patterson governs until his appointment begins on Jaunary 1, 1810.
- 1882 - Planning begins on the Working Men's College in Melbourne, the college later became RMIT University.
- 1948 - Margaret McIntyre becomes the first woman elected to the Parliament of Tasmania. She is killed in a plane crash later in the year.
- 1970 - 120,000 Australians marched at the first of three Vietnam Moratorium Days, protesting Australian participation in the Vietnam War,
