- 1865 - Bushranger Ben Hall is ambushed and shot dead by police at Goobang Creek, New South Wales. He was 27.
- 1882 - Geologist and explorer Sir Douglas Mawson was born.
- 1930 - Amy Johnson landed her De Havilland Gipsy Moth in Darwin, completing the first solo flight by a woman from England to Australia.
- 1947 - Camp Mountain train disaster in Queensland; 16 people were killed and 38 were injured.
- 1998 - A fire aboard the HMAS Westralia kills four people.
