- 1656 - Vergulde Draeck, a Dutch merchant ship bound for Batavia (now Jakarta), was wrecked off Ledge Point, 107 km north of Perth, Western Australia.
- 1923 - Construction of the Sydney Harbour Bridge commenced.
- 1985 - The Nuclear Disarmament Party splits.
- 1996 - 35 persons are murdered in the Port Arthur massacre.
- 2003 - All Pan Pharmaceuticals products are recalled by the Therapeutic Goods Administration after a number of safety problems were found at its manufacturing plant, in what was one of Australia's biggest ever recalls.
