The elections to the Austrian National Council of 1970 were the first where a plurality was won by the SPÖ, now led by Bruno Kreisky. The previous ÖVP government headed by Josef Klaus was replaced by a minority cabinet which was tolerated by the FPÖ (led by Friedrich Peter). Klaus might have been able to carry on as Chancellor by entering into a coalition with the FPÖ, but he immediately resigned after the (rather unexpected) defeat.
Kreisky remained Chancellor of Austria until 1983 after gaining an absolute majority in 1971, 1975 and 1979.
