The elections to the Austrian National Council of 1949 were the first elections after World War II when former Nazis were allowed to vote. A newly created party, the Federation of Independents (VdU) (a predecessor of the Freedom Party of Austria) specifically targeted this group of voters and immediately took away a large number of votes from the ÖVP and SPÖ. The ÖVP, SPÖ and KPÖ continued their coalition, which the KPÖ left in 1950.
