The Australian National Railways Commission (ANRC) was established by the Whitlam Government in 1975, incorporating the Commonwealth Railways, the Tasmanian Government Railways and the non-urban railways of South Australia (the metropolitan Adelaide railway lines are now owned and operated by TransAdelaide).

ANRC was also known as Australian National Railways (ANR) in its early years and was later rebranded as Australian National (AN).

It was privatised in 1997 and its interstate freight operations were sold to Pacific National. TasRail, its Tasmanian operations and infrastructure, was sold to Australian Transport Network Limited, which was taken over by Pacific National in 2004. Its South Australian branch lines were sold to the Australian Railroad Group. Its passenger operations were taken over by Great Southern Railway.
