Australian College of Theology

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Australian College of Theology, a partnership of the Anglican Church of Australia and the affiliated theological institutions, was established in 1891 by the then General Synod of the Church of England in Australia. Its headquarters are located in Sydney, New South Wales

In 1899, there were four awards of the College - the Associate in Theology, the Licentiate in Theology, the Scholar in Theology, and the Fellow of the College of Theology - and about 30 students.

Today the College offers a wide range of accredited higher education awards catering not only for the specialised needs of ministerial and missionary candidates but also for the needs of lay people interested in an understanding of the Christian faith and its implications for contemporary life.

There are currently almost 20 higher education awards on offer. Approximately 2000 students are currently enrolled and studying in the affiliated colleges and with the college itself.

The way this works is, students study at one of the approved teaching institutions (see below), but only the Australian College of Theology is authorised by the Australian Government to grant eg. the Bachelor of Theology degree. So someone attending eg. the Reformed Theological College, Geelong, would actually receive a degree from the Australian College of Theology, without having to go to Sydney. The advantage is that the Approved Teaching Institutions don't need to go through the red tape, administrivia, and bureaucracy that the Government legislation involves; the Australian College of Theology does this for them.
