[edit] Aims

ARW is based in Cardiff and is associated with Aussie Rules International and is directly under the umbrella of Aussie Rules UK which is based in London. ARW's main goals are to work with all stakeholders and to assist with the growth and promotion of the sport within Wales, with its focus being on:

  • Conducting junior clinics and school competitions
  • Combat the growing rise of obesity amongst children in Wales
  • Providing footballs, uniforms and other resources to Welsh football clubs and schools
  • Conducting development visits to schools and football clubs
  • Raising awareness of Australian football and the AFL competition and its affiliates

[edit] Development

ARW is initially focusing on the involvement of children between the ages of 5-15 throughout schools in South Wales in Aussie Rules in Auskick-style programmes. This area of Wales was chosen by ARW due to availability of resources, the concentration of the population and the close proximity to other UK Aussie Rules clubs. Regions such as Cardiff, Swansea and Newport will be the main focal point starting from the 2007 school year.

[edit] Local clubs

ARW has also established the first organised Aussie Rules football club in Wales to compete in the UK competition for the 2007 season. The club is known as the Cardiff Panthers Australian Football Club which is the sister club to the South Adelaide Football Club also known as the Panthers from the South Australian Football League.

[edit] National team

The national Welsh team is managed by ARW and is known as the Cymru Red Dragons.
