Aurelius, New York

Aurelius is a town in Cayuga County, New York, USA. The population was 2,936 at the 2000 census. The town was named after Marcus Aurelius.

The Town of Aurelius is at the western edge of the county and borders the City of Auburn.

The Sullivan Expedition passed through to destroy the Cayuga villages in 1779. This region became part of the Central New York Military Tract, used to compensate New York soldiers for serving in the military.

The first official settler arrived in 1789, but prior immigrants were believed to be making homes on lands belonging to the native Iroquois.

The Town of Aurelius, formed in 1789 was already an existing town when Cayuga County was formed from Onondaga County in 1799.

In 1815, Auburn set itself apart by incorporating as a village.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 82.7 km² (31.9 mi²). 78.4 km² (30.3 mi²) of it is land and 4.3 km² (1.6 mi²) of it (5.17%) is water.

The west town line is defined by Cayuga Lake, one of the larger Finger Lakes. Conjoined U.S. Highway 20 and New York State Route 5 is a major east-west highway. New York State Route 90 is a north-south highway along the shore of Cayuga Lake. New York State Route 326 passes across the southeast part of the town.

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 2,936 people, 1,124 households, and 816 families residing in the town. The population density was 37.4/km² (97.0/mi²). There were 1,281 housing units at an average density of 16.3/km² (42.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 98.60% White, 0.34% African American, 0.14% Native American, 0.03% Asian, 0.07% from other races, and 0.82% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.19% of the population.

There were 1,124 households out of which 31.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.8% were married couples living together, 8.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.4% were non-families. 22.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.59 and the average family size was 3.05.

In the town the population was spread out with 25.6% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 27.1% from 25 to 44, 24.4% from 45 to 64, and 16.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 98.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 98.0 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $41,202, and the median income for a family was $48,188. Males had a median income of $34,125 versus $22,895 for females. The per capita income for the town was $19,323. About 7.4% of families and 8.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.0% of those under age 18 and 4.7% of those age 65 or over.

  • Auburn -- The City of Auburn is at the east end of the town.
  • Cayuga -- The Village of Cayuga on the shore of Cayuga Lake and NY-90.
  • Half Acre -- A location east of Relius on NY-326.
  • Mud Lock -- A hamlet in the northwest part of the town on NY-90. it is located on Cayuga-Seneca Canal, a canal system connecting two Finger Lakes to the Erie Canal.
  • Relius -- A hamlet west of Auburn
