Mining magnate August Paulsen was born in Denmark on July 29, 1871. In 1896 he bought shares in the Hercules Mine in Idaho. On September 15, 1902, Paulsen married Myrtle White of Colfax, Washington. In 1908, Paulsen commissioned the architectural firm of Dow and Hubbell to design the eleven-story Paulsen Building in Spokane, Washington.
