August Bungert (born Mülheim, 14 March 1845 – died Leutesdorf, 26 October 1915) was a German opera composer.

From 1889 onwards he enjoyed the support of the Queen of Romania who founded an organization called the Bungert-Bund to promote his music. Apart from a comic opera called Die Studenten von Salmanca, he concentrated on two epic tetralogies based on the Iliad and the Odyssey entitled Homerische Welt. The first part, Die Ilias (unfinished), was divided into Achilleus and Klytämnestra (with three further sections planned). The second part, which was completed and performed in Dresden between 1898 and 1903, was Die Odyssee which was divided into Kirke, Nausikaa, Odysseus Heimkehr and Odysseus' Tod.

Strongly influenced by Wagner he planned to built a Bayreuth-style theatre in Bad Godesberg.
