- 1828 – The 67 km (42 miles) Andrézieux-Roanne line is authorized in France.
- 1867 – J. Nason and J. F. Wilson, both of Boston, Massachusetts, are awarded the first U.S. patent covering level crossing gates.[1]
- 1894 – Pontiac Pacific Junction Railway opens the segment between Fort-Coulonge and Waltham, Quebec, a line segment that was completed in February 1888.[2]

- 1913 – Jule Murat Hannaford succeeds Howard Elliott as president of Northern Pacific Railway.[3]
- 1946 – The last T1 class steam locomotive built by Baldwin Locomotive Works for Pennsylvania Railroad enters service.[1]
- 1956 – Pacific Great Eastern Railway, in British Columbia, holds official opening ceremonies to celebrate the beginning of service over its line (which occurred on June 11, 1956).[4]
- 1957 – Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway operates its last regularly-scheduled steam locomotive-powered train.[1]
- 1993 – The Green Bay and Western Railroad and the Fox River Valley Railroad are merged into a new Wisconsin Central subsidiary, the Fox Valley and Western Railroad.
- 1997 – Union Pacific Railroad (UP) and the United States Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) form a team comprised of UP managers, union employees and FRA representatives to review safety policies and procedures across the UP system.[5]
