Occupation New York State Assembly member

Audrey Pheffer (b. 1941) represents District 23 in the New York State Assembly, which is comprised of Rockaway Beach, Howard Beach and Ozone Park, among other neighborhoods found within the New York City borough of Queens.

First elected to the Assembly in 1987, Pheffer has been the Chairman of the Assembly Consumer Affairs and Protection Committee since 1995, and is a member of the Committee on Aging, Government Employees, Higher Education, Tourism, Veterans' Affairs, among other standing committees. In the past she has chaired the Assembly's Election Law Committee and the Subcommittee on Outreach and Oversight of Senior Citizen Programs, and served as President of the National Order of Women Legislators from 1995-1996. She currently serves as the secretary of the Legislative Women's Caucus of New York State.

Prior to her election to the New York State Assembly, Pheffer served in a variety of capacities within state and city government. In 1977 she served as a member of the New York City Commission of Human Rights. She would also serve as a Special Assistant to former New York City Council President Andrew Stein and Executive Assistant to State Senator Jeffrey Weinstein.

In 2001 Pheffer launched a run for Queens Borough President before ultimately withdrawing from the race.

Prior to her government service Pheffer worked, from 1973-1977, at the Rockaway Occupational Training Center, where she worked with the mentally disabled.

In 2006 Pheffer faces Stuart W. Mirsky, a Republican candidate who has criticized the incumbent as a "rubber stamp," and asserted that her concern for allegedly trivial issues, e.g. the prolifieration of Yo-Yo Waterballs, masks an unremarkable legislative record.
