Atua is the most ancient district of Samoa, now consisting of most of the eastern half of Upolu but also traditionally incorporates Tutuila and once all of Upolu and Savaii. The capital is Aleipata at Saleaaumua. The district has a population (2001 Census) of 21,168. The highest title of Atua is the TuiAtua, or supreme king of Atua. While there are two ancient branches of this title, the highest of these lives in Aleipata and is called the Ao o Atua or supreme head of Atua. The TuiAtua kings are the most ancient line of Samoa and are direct lineage heirs of the Tagaloalagi line of kings. In Samoa, all claims to royalty or nobility trace or attempt to trace a connection to the TuiAtua lineage.
