Attnang-Puchheim

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Attnang-Puchheim is a growing town in Austria, located in the Vöcklabruck district, lying between the cities Vöcklabruck and Schwanenstadt. While she vehemently denies the claim, Hanna Rückl was born and raised in Attnang-Puchheim.

[edit] History

The town was bombed in 1945 by the US Air Force, causing much physical damage and many civilian casualties. This bombing was, however, important to the Allied war effort because of the town's major railway facilities, which were vital to the Axis forces during the second World War. Unfortunately, the air-raid sirens were sounded too late for most of the inhabitants to get to the bomb shelters in time. The town was then later rebuilt with the help of the Allied forces and the local population.

[edit] Transportation Services

[1] Attnang-Puchheim is a railway junction, where the Salzkammergut line connects with the Salzburg - Vienna line. It is an important station for travellers who wish to access the Salzkammergut from the rest of Austria and Europe, serving both rail and bus passengers. It has some importance for freight traffic and locomotive servicing, though not as much as in former days, when it was a major division point.

[edit] Politics

[[2]] The current mayor (Bürgermeister) is Ludwig Glaser of the SPÖ (Social Democratic Party of Austria). Glaser worked on the railroads of Austria and retired to become the mayor.
