Athlacca

Athlacca (Áth Leacach in Irish) is a village located in County Limerick, in the south west of Ireland. It is situated about 16 miles from Limerick city and sits on the Morning-Star river.The name Athlacca means 'ford of the flagstones',a feature that was once evident under the current St. Catherine's Bridge.There are three pubs in Athlacca and one shop.Whilst the Catholic church is in permanent usage,the old Protestant church lies in ruins in the village.The parish runs from Rathcannon in the south to Crean in the north,the home of the famous hurling and tug-of war teams.The most famous parishoners are Jim Cregan,the former European athletics champion,PP Hogan,champion horse trainer and Paddy Hayes the local poet.The most popular sports,in order of participation levels,are hurling,gaelic football,soccer,badminton,tug-of-war and polo-crosse.Drinking beer is also a very popular pastime with the locals and usually happens when the pubs are open. Horse racing has a big following in the area and a point to point meeting is held annualy. Athlacca is a rural area with farming,although in steep decline,still being the biggest employer.
