Athens Academy is a private, co-educational, college preparatory school in Athens, Oconee County, Georgia, United States. The school sponsors grades K through 12, and also operates a preschool. Founded in 1967, the school's motto is Excellentia Cum Honore or "Excellence with Honor" in English. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, the school received substantial endowments from the Bertelsmann Foundation enabling it to expand and offer the top education available in Northeast Georgia. The money was spent upgrading the school's media networks and library systems and providing laptops for all students in grades 7-12. The school is one of the only high schools in the country that webcasts school events.
Also, Matt Skinner, long time Saturday Night Live contributor, graduated the school in 1990. Female professional golfer Vicki Goetze attended Athens Acadmey and won the Boys Golf title twice in Georgia High School Association (GHSA). Basketball player Jill Razor set 43 scoring records in her tenure, with several national records as well. Field goal kicker Billy Bennett played here and then went on to set a Southeastern Conference football scoring record at the University of Georgia and also has a cameo as the soccer style field goal kicker in the film "We Are Marshall."
During the 2006-2007 school year, the school won first place in the state One Act Play competition with "The Night Thoreau Spent in Jail." The football team made history as well by advancing to the Georgia Dome in Atlanta with the Class A semi-final playoffs for the first time after completing an undefeated regular season.
Nicknamed the Spartans, Athens Academy competes in region 8-A of the Georgia High School Association (GHSA). They field teams in cross country, football, swimming, golf, track and field, basketball, volleyball (girls only), soccer, tennis, and baseball.
