[edit] áthas (milwaukee based traditional irish band)

After finding one another amongst the local trad scene and forging fast friendships, Heather Lewin-Tiarks, Amy Richter, and Jeff Ksiazek have joined together as Milwaukee's latest Irish trad band, áthas. The name áthas (Irish for joy and gladness) suits them perfectly -- they're always found laughing, joking, or spreading joy through their music.

The musicians of áthas play various traditional and non-trad instruments such as fiddle, flute, bodhrán, viola, whistles, djembe, guitar and concertina. The group draws inspiration from a variety of sources including Comas, Dave Munnelly Band, Flook, Lúnasa and Liz Carroll.

áthas can be spotted at local sessions, pubs, ceilis, weddings, festivals and other various venues, including the Irish Cultural and Heritage Center (ICHC) and Milwaukee Irish Fest. They've managed to establish a strong relationship with Milwaukee and Chicago's Irish dance community and have been in demand for ceilidhs, sets, and feiseanna, as well as concerts.

The band has been working hard to revive the Celtic Music Club at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) and to establish more session opportunities for local upcoming musicians. áthas has a strong desire to spread the music and keep it alive!
