[edit] Summary

A comparison of the distribution of asteroid semi-major axis. The red line shows the distribution of "double-opposition" asteroids at the end of 2005 (about 300,000 in total). The blue line shows the distribution of only the first 10,000 numbered asteroids orbiting in the range 2.0–3.5 AU (this was current around the middle of the 1980s).

The differences are clearly statistically significant.

Orbital elements taken from the astorb database. This data was dated 27 Dec 2005, and computed by Edward Bowell.

The "relative density" has been normalised so that the area under the line is one.
