Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

Julius Caesar is told about a prisoner, Tortuous Convolvulus, who can cause dissension and stir up a fight between anyone - including the lions which were to devour him in the circus. Impressed by his ability, Caesar sends the troublemaker to divide the Gauls.

Convolvulus weedles his way into the Gaulish village and quickly stirs up distrust between the villagers - most notably, he uses the ruse that the Romans have acquired the secret of the Magic Potion from Asterix -, but in the end the friendship between the Gauls stands firm. After a major fight against all four Roman garrisons around the village, Asterix and the Gauls turn the tables on Convolvulus in an ingenious move, labelling him as a traitor and getting him sent back to Rome for punishment. After a final move to purge their fellows from the bad influence, centering around a test both of Chief Vitalstatistix's birthday present (a new shield, part of a growing collection of shields that have piled up over the years, to the disgust of Impedimenta) and of whether the mood of discord is fully defunct, the story ends with the traditional banquet.

[edit] Notes

  • This is the first appearance of several female villagers — Impedamenta's inner circle of prominent wives. In particular the wives of Geriatrix and Fulliautomatix, and an obese lady whose husband is not mentioned, but who appears in many crowd and background scenes in later albums are first seen here.
