Aspromonte

Aspromonte is a mountain close by Reggio, overlooking the Strait of Messina, near which Giuseppe Garibaldi was defeated and captured in 1862 in the Battle of Aspromonte. It is a section which was established originally by Greeks fleeing from the onslaught of the Turkish invasion. Even today, this section is noted for their Greek cuisine and culture and the old timers still speak Greek throughout Aspromonte.
