I recall reading somewhere that many Chinese labourers were bought to South Africa to work on building Railway lines in the Transvaal in the early 20th Centuary, but the majority of them were forced to return to China after the work was completed.

For completeness the Cape Malays should be mentioned as technically they are Asian, hailing from Malasia/Indonesia. --Htaccess 03:27, 31 Jan 2004 (UTC)

[edit] "Honorary whites"

I find it very interesting that Japanese and Taiwanese Chinese were given "honorary white" status under apartheid, and I would love to use this fact in the essay I'm writing. However, there is no citation for this fact and I cannot use it without proof in my essay. It's too late for me to use it, but perhaps for future use someone could provide a link to a site which backs up this historical oddity. I'll take a look myself in the meantime.
