Asim Ghosh

Asim Ghosh is the Managing Director of Hutchison Essar, branded as Hutch, a leading telecom company operating in India. He is currently in the news because of a highly probable acquisition of Hutch-Essar. It was all his efforts that brought the company to such heights that it was valued at over US$ 15 b.

Mr. Asim Ghosh received his Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering from [[IIT Delhi]] in 1969 and proceeded to obtain an MBA from the Wharton School,University of Pennsylvania in 1970.

Mr. Gosh started his career in marketing with Procter and Gamble in North America, probably as the first Indian ever to join that company in marketing. In 1980, he joined Rothmans International in Canada where he was eventually Senior Vice President of business development and Board Director in one of Canada's largest breweries. Mr. Ghosh had intended to return to India a couple of years after his MBA, but in the event, eventually returned in 1989 to set up the Foods operations of Pepsi Foods. He moved to Hong Kong in 1991 to setup a joint venture between Pepsi and Hutchison Whampoa, soon took over the general management of all of Hutchison Whampoa consumer goods business and returned to India again in 1998 to takeover as Managing Director of Hutchison Whampoa's telecom joint ventures in India.

Mr. Ghosh has played a colossal role in successfully guiding the Indian Telecom industry as a whole and Hutch in particular, through a period of tremendous change, evolution, growth and development. His strategic and visionary leadership has made, the Telecom sector and Hutch, thrive. He has over seen the growth of Hutch from a one-city operation of some 140,000 subscribers to a national operation of almost 18 million subscribers.

The company has been adjudged the "Most Respected Telecom Company" twice by Business World magazine in the last three occasions, and No.1 in Customer Satisfaction on several occasions.
