[edit] Ashmore Estates
Ashmore, Illinois, USA
Ashmore Estates is known as one of the most haunted places in Illinois. Originally constructed in 1916 as the Coles County Almshouse at the County's Poor Farm. The building was used to house Coles County's indigent and elderly who had no close relatives. The original wood structured poor farm house (built in 1870) had burned down in 1880 killing a 7 year old girl (Elva L. Skinner) in the fire.
The building was constructed of concrete, steel, brick, and morter. The building was designed to withstand tornados as well as be fireproof. It was the Almshouse until around 1956 when it migrated into a mental institution. In 1976 the building received a three floor addition and became an Intermediate Care Facility for the Developely Disabled. Within eleven years (1987) the building was closed because the State of Illinois was changing the way they housed the Developementally Disabled. The state went to 6 - 16 person group homes. Ashmore Estates housed as many as 47 people in its prime.
Many paranormal groups have visited the estates in 2006 and claim the building is "brimming with activity". Seventy people have died in the building according to records. Spirits like Mary, an unknown little boy, Joe (Oliver) Bloxom and Elva Skinner - mentioned above - are some of the spirits whom roam the halls of this historic building.
