As Tall as Lions
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
As Tall as Lions, sometimes referred to as ATAL, is a band from Long Island, New York. The band was founded sometime in early 2002 as members of a previous band, Sundaze, were looking for a fresh start. These members were Dan Nigro (vocals, guitar, piano), Saen Fitzgerald (guitar, drums), and Cliff Sarcona (drums). During the recording of their first EP, titled Blood and Aphorisms, Brian Fortune (guitar, piano) was added to the band. "Blood and Aphorisms" met with small local success as the band began to tour around and make a name for itself in the thriving indie rock community. At this time, ATAL added Brian Caesar (bass) to the lineup. The band was seen as a unique entity inside of the indie scene, not necessarily fitting in creatively with the other emo bands, but never failing to win over the emo fans. This uniqueness was enough for ATAL to score a record deal with New York City's Triple Crown Records. The band relocated to the Midwest for the composition and recording of the first full-length album, which would eventually be called Lafcadio. The album was released in the Spring of 2004 and met with mixed reviews. In the ensuing months, ATAL went through its share of problems as Brian Fortune announced he was leaving the band, only to be followed by Brian Caesar as the touring schedule progressed. Caesar was replaced by good friend and multi-instrumentalist Julio Tavarez. After years of touring under their belts, ATAL returned to the studio to record their 2nd full length, As Tall As Lions. It was recorded with producer Steve Haigler and long time producer of ATAL, Mike Watts. Currently, ATAL is busy promoting their new self-titled album, which was released August 8th, 2006. ATAL continues to tour in support of this record, including recently to Australia nationwide.
