Dr Aryeh Judah Schoen Nusbacher is a Canadian military historian, Senior Lecturer at Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and a talking head for many historical documentaries.
Born in New York City in 1966 of Jewish heritage, Nusbacher grew up on the shores of Lake Ontario. He went to school in Rochester, took a BA Honours in history and economics at the University of Toronto in 1988, working there in a variety of administrative posts for 6 years. In 1994 he completed a 2 year MA in war studies at the Royal Military College of Canada in Kingston. He took his doctorate in history from the Oxford University in 2001, having already been appointed to Sandhurst in 1999.
In addition to his academic work, Nusbacher appears on several historical television documentaries, providing expert comment and explanation of military strategy. These range from 20th century conflicts (World War 2 in particular) to ancient military engagements involving the Roman and Greek civilisations. Nusbacher is best recognised in UK for his role on the prime time BBC Two edutainment programme Time Commanders. On the show Nusbacher plays his usual role, explaining the finer points of military science and tactics to the viewer. In addition, at the end of the show, Nusbacher, along with another military expert, provides feedback about how well (or, more often than not, badly) the team has performed, as well as showing how the real historical battle was fought.
