From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hello there Arvindn, welcome to the 'pedia! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. If you need pointers on how we title pages visit Wikipedia:Naming conventions or how to format them visit our manual of style. If you have any other questions about the project then check out Wikipedia:Help or add a question to the Village pump. BTW, nice work on the chess and mathematics articles. Cheers! --maveric149

Yes, good work indeed - end game is a really nice article (I've moved it to endgame by the way, which I think is the more common usage). I've answered you queries on Talk:Chess - I think a chess terminology page is a great idea. Just one thing - there's a convention to put comments on talk pages at the bottom of the page rather than the top. Otherwise, keep up the good work, and have fun! --Camembert

You wanna try and make a killah chess section with me and maybe User:Ram-man? Vera Cruz

Sure. I have a good number of chess books. What exactly do you envisage in a killer chess section?

Hey, cool article on simulated annealing. if you could provide a link, it would be a GREAT article. please respond to user_talk:hfastedge

Yep, hit counters and many special pages are frozen in order to keep the site going. --mav 17:32 Jan 22, 2003 (UTC)

Good job on fixing the articles in Indian Mutiny. -- Skysmith 09:40 16 May 2003 (UTC)

Why don't you write Sawfish? And also a disambiguation page at Sawfish, please. -- Paddu 10:11 5 Jun 2003 (UTC)

Hi, you cast a vote in the TEMP5 debate. The Temp5 proposal was voted down by 61.3% to 38.6%. We seem to be going around in circlces on the whole issue of the main page. A new vote is now taking place to clarify what exactly we want, namely

  1. Do we actually want to have a new page?
  2. If so when (immediately, after a pause, timed to the press release, etc)?
  3. What do people want on the front page and what do they want excluded?

As of now, the whole issue seems surrounded by complete confusion. This way, finally and definitively, we will know what we want and when we want it. So do please express your opinions. The vote is on the same page as the previous votes. FearÉIREANN 20:29, 13 Aug 2003 (UTC)

Thanks for the clean up on list of cryptographers -- ww

Hey.... You're probably right re 2002 Gujarat violence that we can rely on exhaustion. It has been weeks, however, and it seems that page protection is largely for this sort of case. I also don't know how it would cause attention to be drawn to it, and I think the user wants a different view presented, not attention to the page as stands. It is only one person, of course, so presumably it will settle down soon enough either way. -- VV 09:43, 1 Nov 2003 (UTC)

[edit] other wikipedists say hello

hey arvind, if you're interested in how the primary source data collection equivalent of Wikipedia - Indymedia - has (so far) developed in India, you can have a look at http://docs.indymedia.org/view/Local/ImcIndia and of course at the websites http://india.indymedia.org and http://mumbai.indymedia.org . Understanding wikipedia style NPOV could help a lot for organising truly open, local independent media groups in India - in which everyone, including Sangh Parivar supporters and people in islamic groups, can participate, but not dominate nor impose hate speech.

Oops, sorry about the goofup with 'incomprehensible'. From the context i thought it was just a grammatical error. from now on, i'll be more careful.

--Deepak (btw, do you remember me from school? maybe my friend Athreya's name will ring a bell.)

Hi!
When I saw your user page a couple of days back I thought I knew you but couldn't quite place you. So I looked up your home page and couldn't remember even after seeing your photograph. Since we weren't form the same school nor the same univ I concluded I must have been mistaken.
Of course, it was JEE class. I remember perfectly now :)
Welcome to the 'pedia!
BTW, in case you're wondering what I'm doing at IITM, I'm doing "dual degree", which means that after 5 years you get a B.Tech + M.Tech. I'm busy apping right now :) -- Arvindn 11:06, 27 Nov 2003 (UTC)

Many characterizations of π do not mention integration. Which among them should be considered definitions is perhaps a subtler question. The notion of limit is not really needed, since one can say simply that it's the least upper bound of the set of all perimeters of inscribed polygons. Michael Hardy 21:41, 1 Dec 2003 (UTC)

That's true. It occured to me that in fact Archimedes's upper/lower bounds for Π using polygnons can be used to give a proof that (arguably) does not involve calculus. -- Arvindn 05:09, 2 Dec 2003 (UTC)

Hey, you are doing splendid work in maths and India related articles. Way to go! Just a suggestion. Please fill the edit summary when you edit articles. Do you have anything against it ? :-) chance 13:55, Dec 13, 2003 (UTC)

OK, I'll try to in the future. Its just that I'm too lazy :) -- Arvindn 15:16, 13 Dec 2003 (UTC)

Hi Arvind,

[edit] R. Daneel Olivaw

"Demerzel is a *character*! He can't be redirected just because he later turns out to be something else". Arvindn

Why not? For example, there is only one page for Anakin Skywalker, and Darth Vader is a redirect. Eto Demerzel is not a separate character - it is another name of the same character. The same with Chetter Hummin. Look at the What links here? pages for Demerzel and Hummin - the only mentions of those names in other articles are just next to explanations that they are in fact false identities of R. Daneel Olivaw. Furthermore, a person who didn't see The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi might not know that Vader and Anakin are the same person, while anyone who read Prelude to Foundation knows that Demerzel, Hummin and Olivaw are the same person, and those who didn't won't look at the Chetter Hummin and Eto Demerzel articles anyway, as they can only be found in this novel and are not very widely known. Hi Arvindn,

I am sure that would be good, however I am not too familiar with the details of Hindu mythology (being for all practical purposes an atheist or agnostic or whatever:-))! User:Chancemill seems to be very knowledgeable in this area and even started a mythology series (check out his user page). However, he suddenly seems to have disappeared after nominating me for adminship (which I felt uncomfortable to refuse)!! I had wanted to nominate him for adminship shortly because of his friendly nature and enthusiasm. BTW, you have been consistently doing good work. Are you interested in adminship, I have been thinking about nominating you. Asking like this will not make you obliged to accept:-) KRS 14:24, 22 Feb 2004 (UTC)

If you're agnostic that's all the better for NPOV! Anyway even the existing articles could use a lot of standardization. I'll go ahead and start a WikiProject, feel free to contribute as you wish. Let's hope Chancemill comes back.
As for adminship, yes that would definitely be very nice :) Though the only feature I think I would use is rollback. -- Arvindn 17:53, 22 Feb 2004 (UTC)
I happened to sneak into your discussion, and I thought it would be appropriate to announce that I am still alive :-). Was away from wiki for a few days because of some pressing commitments.
Hindu mythology is a great idea. Edits in this field now are sporadic. Currently, one has to mine through sparse links to get through to some good articles. Needs heavy cleanup, and a project is just the right way to start doing something. I promise to be of any help. Chancemill 18:22, Feb 22, 2004 (UTC)

Hi Arvindn,

Have nominated you for adminship. Consider the boilerplate text as having been told to you:-) KRS 14:00, 26 Feb 2004 (UTC)

Hi, maybe you already know, but just to remind you, you have to convey your acceptance in the requests for admin page. KRS 16:08, 1 Mar 2004 (UTC)
Thanks for reminding me; actually I was wondering about that, and I thought you only have to accept after the voting period is over; other people didn't seem to be doing it either, and it wasn't clear from what the page said. I'll do it soon. And big thanks for having confidence in me and nominating me :-) -- Arvindn 17:06, 1 Mar 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Hindu Mythology Images

Hi! The images from http://www.shrimadbhagavatam.org that you have been uploading recently seem to be allowed only to be put on websites, right? There is no mention of whether they are allowed to be put on CD's or printed material. So to release it under the GFDL, you might have to get permission from the authors. Probably this needs a discussion? -- Paddu 20:43, 28 Feb 2004 (UTC)

Well yeah, from a literal reading you can't put it in other media, but its pretty obvious that their intention is that they don't have a problem with any redistribution. Anyway there's lots of ambiguous images on wikipedia, which are "contended to be under fair use" (see recent big fat mailing list thread "what would Richard Stallman say?"), so until there's a clear policy I'm not going to lose any sleep over the issue. -- Arvindn 06:25, 29 Feb 2004 (UTC)

Re: game theory in biology. Basically, yes. The synthesis of game theory into biology in the late 20th century particularly by W.D. Hamilton was very important (I'd rate Hamilton as the third most important biologist ever, after Charles Darwin and Ronald Fisher.

It can be used in foraging theory, reproductive theory (particularly Hamilton's rule), prisoner's dilemmas (iterated or otherwise - q.v. Axelrod and Hamilton 1981 in science).

If you wanted to put it into a subset, I'd put it into behaviour, or behavioural ecology, which follows Niko Tinbergen's four questions, one of which is evolutionary history, another of which is the selective advantage an action confers, whereas the other two, the stimulus and the mechanism itself are important here but not directly relevant to evolution. -- 144.32.128.73

I am sorry about that... Nagpur's status isn't common knowledge. I see from the Government of Maharashtra site that it is referred to as the second capital of Maharashtra. My error, I suppose... had never heard of it --Hemanshu 19:34, 14 Mar 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Birthday problem

I have put the Halmos quote back into the birthday paradox article, but deleted the first two sentences, so that the emphasis is no longer "anti-calculator", but rather it is about a more theoretical, rather than just numerical, view of the problem. I changed the title of that section for the same reason. Michael Hardy 20:27, 23 Mar 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Hinduism

Hi,

If/ when you have the time and the inclination, could you please look into Hinduism? User Sam Spade seems to consider it right to refer to Hinduism as an ethnicity and does not seem to see reason. Currently I am hard pressed for time and have connectivity problems also, but I would hate to see something incorrect in this page when so many Indians/ Hindus are Wikipedians. Thanks KRS 04:03, 24 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Hi, I hate to say it, but Sam Spade is right, at least partly. See my recent edits to article. -- Arvindn 14:08, 24 Mar 2004 (UTC)
Taking another look at the talk page, it looks like what I've written is pretty close to what you were saying, so I guess everybody's happy :) -- Arvindn 06:38, 26 Mar 2004 (UTC)
Hi, Unfortunately, the talk page for the article has become a graffiti wall, with people having a free-for-all throwing conspiracy theories and little-known assertions. Is there a limit to what can be discussed on the Talk Page? I am sorry to see an article that was shaping up so well, become a party to a dispute, so disassociated with the topic. I am particularly peeved at the assertion that there is a class of native Indian Hindus who are more flexible to the other religions, and that the so-called 'real' Hindus (who are supposedly foreign) are not. Isnt this suggestion racist to say the least? I would like to know your opinion on this issue. Chancemill 05:58, Mar 25, 2004 (UTC)
I wanted to keep out of the mudslinging, but since you asked me, I'll take a swipe :)
First, there's no big deal about stupid arguments on talk pages; as long as it doesn't affect the article I don't see the problem. Anyway this is quite minor, as arguments on wikipedia go: I don't know if you were around last year when we had a problem user on the 2002 Gujarat violence and related pages.
Getting to the issue, a good percentage of Tamils live in the kind of reality distortion field you encountered. One aspect is the supposed oldness of Tamil: my father, for example, believes it is "billions" of years old, although I doubt he has the faintest idea how many digits there are in a billion. Another is the "anti-Hindutva" philosophy of the DMK etc; in its extreme form the ultimate goal is ethnic cleansing of the "Aryan" settlers and regaining the Tamil country for its rightful "Dravidian" inhabitants. Of course the theory is highly dubious (and obviously racist, that's the whole point). As for the specific point about Kali, my family are Brahmins, but they worship a mother goddess. Keep in mind, however, that when dealing with people who don't let facts get in the way of their silly casteist notions, it might not be fruitful to pursue the point further.

[edit] Zwischenzug

Hello Arvindn! Neat chess board! I just want to you look at Zwischenzug:

You see I converted the table syntax. What do you like it? The only current problem with putting together chess position from your pieces is that it clutters the wikitext. Do you think it's better with the new syntax? I think we should make all chess positions in this new syntax..

— Sverdrup 16:35, 4 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Hi! Nice to know you like it. The wiki syntax for the table, unfortunately, doesn't work in the Microsoft browser: there are gaps between the squares.
As for the clutter, I'm really hoping that once the syntax for extensions is finalized, the little script I wrote to generate the table from a concise description will go into MediaWiki.
Arvindn 03:18, 5 Apr 2004 (UTC)
Ah, I see. To create a simple syntax for chess is a very good idea, thanks for your work on it. — Sverdrup 09:37, 5 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Thanks for your encouragement, Arvind. Also, Congrats on becoming an admin! -- Sundar 05:07, Apr 12, 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Template for RC?

From the pump

Could someone tell me where the template for the message that appears on top of RecentChanges is located? Just curious. I tried MediaWiki:Recentchanges, but that doesn't seem to be it. Is there a list of useful but non-obvious templates somewhere? Thanks. Arvindn 19:04, 17 Apr 2004 (UTC)

  • It is oddly located at Wikipedia:Recentchanges. For lists of actual MediaWiki namespace messages, see Wikipedia:MediaWiki custom messages and Wikipedia:MediaWiki custom elements -- Cyrius|&#9998 19:26, Apr 17, 2004 (UTC)
    • Presumably, this is because its creation (Feb 13, 2003; I checked) predated the concept of MediaWiki pages. Given that we do have them now, however, perhaps the code should be changed so that this is one, for consistency's sake (and not, as such, a custom one - presumably its appearance is hard-coded somewhere). - IMSoP 02:42, 18 Apr 2004 (UTC)

[edit] thanks

Thanks for the congrats on the voting. Not sure what'll do now with stupendous power, but... Looks like no one has been sufficiently irritated to squawk, but maybe there's a movement of which I'm unaware to suppress the multitudinous dissent. Anyway, thanks. ww 18:35, 20 Apr 2004 (UTC)

[edit] A Wikiproject Cryptography?

Arvindn, do you think we would benefit from a Wikiproject Cryptography? I have hacked together a proposal for Wikiproject Cryptography. It might be a reasonable place for collecting together useful information, identifying needs, and hosting more general discussions. I guess that even though we don't (at the moment) have a huge number of editors working on this, it still might prove useful. What do you think? — Matt 17:45, 21 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Yup, we need one. I'll take a look. Thanks for taking the effort. Arvindn 14:48, 22 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Wow Arvindn that was fast. Ok I will check back tommorrow and see what it looks like. murph 09:24, April 23, 2004 p.s. I guess I need to go play in the sandbox some more

Well, I had a look, but I couldn't find anything definitive on the Hastings 1895 thing (I thought there was something in one of Edward Winter's Chess Notes, but I couldn't find anything). It seems plausable, as Chigorin didn't look like winning until quite late in his game, so if that's your memory of what Chernev said, it's probably right. I'm sure there's something definitive in some really obvious book, I've just not found it. Nice article on the tournament, by the way. --Camembert

[edit] India articles

Hey, Arvindn, if you are still active on Wikipedia, you might want to take a look at 2002 Gujarat violence and some new material being added about recent terrorist attacks on other pages by User:Fatalvenom/User:Romanwarrior, some moved to Talk:2002 Gujarat violence. If this person is not our old friend User:LibertarianAnarchist/Democrate2003/Conradx, he is doing a convincing impression. Anyway, most of his work (short of some deletions) does not seem obviously wrong, so I've of late only been touching up. However, you're probably more knowledgeable about developments in India than I am and might see POV not obvious to me. Worrisome in particular is the changing of Kashmir-based to Pakistan-based on 1993 Mumbai bombings. -- VV 06:41, 6 May 2004 (UTC)

Hi, thanks for informing me. Unfortunately I don't have any time at the moment, but after the next few days I might, and if I do I'll take a look. Arvindn 09:03, 6 May 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Ramakrishna

Arvind, can you move Ramakrishna Paramhansa to Ramakrishna Paramahamsa? I'll take care of the double-redirects, as well as additional redirects from, say Ramakrishna Paramahansa, etc. Thanks. Ambarish | Talk 22:37, 19 May 2004 (UTC)

Hi, anyone can move a page. Look for the "move this page" link on the left. Arvindn 02:23, 20 May 2004 (UTC)
Er, not if the other page is a redirect. Doesn't it have to be deleted by an admin? Thanks. Ambarish | Talk 04:23, 20 May 2004 (UTC)
Hi, about the Ramakrishna page, its weird because AFAIK if A redirects to B then you can move B to A without bothering to delete it. Otherwise you wouldn't have "move wars" between two people disagreeing about what to call an article. But I tried it and it didn't work. Slightly alarmed that I've been away from wikipedia for so long that I don't even remember basic stuff, I didn't want to go deleting anything, so I just cut-n-pasted from one article into the other. Not sure if its OK with you though, because if it was you wouldn't have asked me in the first place. Arvindn 02:55, 2 Jun 2004 (UTC) (moved from User_talk:Ambarish)
Well, it's apparently not the recommended solution, but it's all right for the moment, I guess. If you have the time, maybe you could merge edit histories according to the recipe in the above page. Thanks anyway. Ambarish | Talk 16:35, 4 Jun 2004 (UTC)

[edit] formal mechanism for the cypher v cipher issue

Arvindn, We cryptiacs now have an actual page for discussing cy v ci. You might want to look at it for amusement, or if you feel strongly one way or another, ... I have summarized some folks' positions insofar as I know them at current standings. You might want to chyme (or chime) in there, or not of course.

Just noticed the thesis comment, hope it's going well. What's the topic, if that's not too intrusive a question? ww 17:27, 26 May 2004 (UTC)

Thanks for pointing out about the discussion, but considering that I'm not even finding time for "productive" editing on wikipedia, I don't expect to be jumping into discussions of such ponderous matters as the spellings of cipher any time soon ;^)
My thesis is on "Computational Secret Sharing". It builds on this paper if you're curious. Arvindn 03:10, 2 Jun 2004 (UTC)

[edit] WikiProject Cryptography mailshot

Hi, quick note to let you know about what's happening with the WikiReader in Cryptography. There's now a provisional Table of Contents to work with, and for the next 68 days or so there'll be an "Article of the Day" scheme: each day there'll be a particular article highlighted for reviewing and fixing. There's two templates for this purpose: Template:WikiReaderCryptographyAOTD and Template:WikiReaderCryptographyAOTD-Verbose. The smaller one looks like this:

WikiReader Cryptography — article of the day edit
MRR
Sunday, 24 July Playfair cipher (Talk) (History)

Monday, 25 July Message authentication code (Talk) (History)

Tuesday, 26 July Digital signature (Talk) (History)

Wednesday, 27 July Block cipher modes of operation (Talk) (History)

Thursday, 28 July Export of cryptography (Talk) (History)

Notes: If you find problems that you can't fix (or it's too much effort), it would be very helpful if you could place a note on the Talk: page. Articles need to be checked for 1) Accuracy (Factchecking: Are there any mistakes? Is the writing precise? Are sources cited?), 2) Completeness (Any obvious omissions? Does it need illustration?) 3) Quality of writing (Copyedits: Grammar and spelling, phrasing, structure) 4) Neutrality (Is it written from the NPOV? Do we document all relevant points of view?) — Thanks!
Image:Evolution-tasks-old.pngTo-do list for Digital signature edit
  • Describe cryptanalysis of digital signatures -- what are the various notions of security for a signature scheme?
  • Mention the common association of message encryption with digital signatures.
(See all to-do lists for this WikiReader)

These articles are likely to be some of the earliest English Wikipedia content to get turned into a print version, and any help in making them as good as possible would be much appreciated. Thanks! — Matt 01:48, 29 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 1000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:

To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" template into their user page, but there are other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:

Option 1
I agree to multi-license all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

OR

Option 2
I agree to multi-license all my contributions to any U.S. state, county, or city article as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" with "MultiLicensePD". If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know what you think at my talk page. It's important to know either way so no one keeps asking. -- Ram-Man (comment| talk)

[edit] RFC pages on VfD

Should RFC pages be placed on VfD to be deleted? I'm considering removing Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Slrubenstein, Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Jwrosenzweig and Wikipedia:Requests for comment/John Kenney from WP:VFD. Each of them was listed by CheeseDreams. Your comments on whether I should do this would be appreciated. - Ta bu shi da yu 03:18, 10 Dec 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Eric S. Raymond

The link to Eric S. Raymond on your home page goes to "Internet Troll"

No it doesn't. Someone vandalized the Eric S. Raymond article. Now its reverted back. Arvindn 06:02, 4 Jan 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Blanked your user page

Hi Arvindn, just noticed that you've blanked your user page. Is there some special reason for that? -- Sundar 04:42, Feb 7, 2005 (UTC)

I don't do anything other than an occasional typo fix these days, and it seemed rather pompous to have such a big user page. Arvindn 06:06, 7 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Oh, OK. I was afraid of the worst possibility of you leaving Wikipedia. -- Sundar 06:14, Feb 7, 2005 (UTC)

I've tried many times to become more active but the site is slow as molasses and that always turns me off. Back when I was in India every site was slow so that wasn't a problem :) Arvindn 06:29, 7 Feb 2005 (UTC)

[edit] New Mathematics Wikiportal

I noticed you've done some work on Mathematics articles. I wanted to point out to you the new Mathematics Wikiportal- more specifically, to the Mathematics Collaboration of the Week page. I'm looking for any math-related stubs or non-existant articles that you would like to see on Wikipedia. Additionally, I wondered if you'd be willing to help out on some of the Collaboration of the Week pages.

I encourage you to vote on the current Collaboration of the Week, because I'm very interested in which articles you think need to be written or added to, and because I understand that I cannot do the enormous amount of work required on some of the Math stubs alone. I'm asking for your help, and also your critiques on the way the portal is set up.

Please direct all comments to my user-talk page, the Math Wikiportal talk page, or the Math Collaboration of the Week talk page. Thanks a lot for your support! ral315 02:54, Feb 11, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Calcutta -> Kolkata name change

Hi there. I noticed you voted in the Wikipedia:Naming policy poll to keep the Wikipedia policy of naming an article with the most familiar English name. You may not be aware that another attempt has begun to rename the Calcutta article to Kolkata, which is blatantly not the most common name of the city, whether it's official or not. If you want to vote on the issue you can do so at Talk:Calcutta. Cheers. -- Necrothesp 13:34, 5 Mar 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Request you to vote. Calcutta move to Kolkata

There is a vote on to decide if a move of article from Calcutta to Kolkata should be made. I have made a case for a support vote. I request you to participate in the poll and share your independent opinion. More at Talk:Calcutta#Straw_poll_on_the_move_of_Calcutta_to_Kolkata Regards Arunram 17:50, 7 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Hi Arvindn, I saw your vote on wikipedia On Kolkata rename and your opinion that we are changing names on the whims of politicians. Do you really think so? For example what do you make of Chennai and Madras. I think Chennai is more apt and appropriate. After all why carry a name that came in because a few folks who came over to India thought it best to call it while the other names existed for years and have been in active use by the local folks. Think about it. It is not purely political. Cheers Arunram 04:18, 8 Mar 2005 (UTC)
I have thought quite a bit about it and what I wrote is my considered opinion and I stand by it. I believe each of us is entitled to our opinion. Thank you. Arvindn 11:43, 8 Mar 2005 (UTC)
P.S I've lived most of my life in Madras and I call it and have always called it Madras. So have all of my family and most of my friends. I'd seriously find it laughable if anyone called Calcutta Kolkata outside of a context that required political correctness. I consider the confounding of place names with anti-British sentiments to be jingoistic nonsense. Arvindn 11:48, 8 Mar 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Zürich to Zurich

Zürich has been nominated on Wikipedia:Requested moves for a page move to Zurich. Perhapse you might like to express your opinion about this proposed move on talk:Zürich. Philip Baird Shearer 10:34, 8 Apr 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Request move

Hi, can I request you to move the page Hindustan Tejas to ADA Tejas (This is the name under which the LCA Tejas is listed in Jane's Aircrafts), Also Hindustan Tejas doesn't make any sense.

[edit] Chess images

I was wondering if you could not upload your beautiful chess images (like Image:Chess_kld40.png) to the wikimedia commons, then other wikipedias would be able to use them as well.

Thank you for the heads up. --Aravind Parvatikar 06:42, 23 December 2005 (UTC) I thought any thing which is minor compared to the value of the article is always a minor edit. Its good that you have told me abou this minor edit stuff. I now have to keep in mind to uncheck it everytime if i add text. Great - Happy Holidays. bye --Aravind Parvatikar 11:02, 23 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] planquin

Hey I thought I did a little bit of research before adding that paragraph.

--Aravind Parvatikar 15:28, 23 December 2005 (UTC)

That was my whole point - the Puranas are not "Vedic texts". I'm not even sure what is a "Vedic text" and what is not has a proper definition, but the Puranas were written 1500-2500 years after the Vedas, so there's no way they qualify. If you want to say there are references to palanquins in the Puranas, sure go ahead. Arvindn 16:40, 23 December 2005 (UTC)

Thank you for clarification... I thought that the purans and the vedas had their origin during the same period of time. I belive i need to understand them a bit. any way i solicit your guidance in future also and wish you a happy & prosperous new year--Aravind Parvatikar 10:51, 24 December 2005 (UTC)

I wish you the same :) Arvindn 14:23, 24 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Hindu Mythology

I'm trying organize the the Hindu Myth category. Would you like to help me? Right now I'm just adding the HinduMythology template to all the articles under hindu mythology. And I putting WikiProject Hindu Mythology at the top of an article's Talk page. This includes Hindu dieties. I'm trying to also move any Hindu diety articles under the Hindu Mythology cat to the Hindu dieties cat. --Dangerous-Boy 08:15, 11 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Seeking guidance

I am seeking your guidance and advice on a particular issue. Mahuri page on wikipedia was initiated by me, and I have contributed to the page from time to time. As per policy of the wikipedia anyone can use the contents of wikipedia, but I understand that use of such contents should indicate the source, that is, the wikipedia. The contents of the page Mahuri have been used in the site mahurivaisya without giving any reference to wikipedia - though I am glad that they have used our contents. In this case, a problem may arise at a future date if that website takes a stand that the contents of page Mahuri on wikipedia have been copied from that site and thus violates copyrights. In an alternative scenario, a user here may tag our Mahuri page with copyright violation under the impression that our contents have been copied from that site, reference to which was given by me long back as an external link when that site was not active and having only a welcome page. Although I am not aware of any such issue, which wikipedians may have encountered in the past, I believe that such a situation may have arisen earlier too. I seek your advice and guidance to deal with this issue, which you are requested to kindly post on my talk page please. I also utilize this opportunity to say Hello to you. Thanks. --Bhadani 13:56, 2 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Request,Nomination for removal Khalistan article

Hello Sir I'm nominating this page for deletion because it is written with a point of view , excessive use of unreliable sources.and the title "Khalistan" is wrong for the topic because "Khalistan" does not exist, lack of support from resident Punjabi's and Sikhs in India, but there was a "Movement for Khalistan" and that is the right title for the topic, and i think this whole article "a new name" should be rewritten with the help of people from sikh community "in" India and other Indians, because this topic is related to politics/people of India. We all should understand Khalistan is not a political entity and having a article is not justified, Microsoft Encarta and Britannic encyclopedia don't have an article known as "Khalistan" but they do have articles on the movement that took place decades back, and i think there are also copyright issues involved with this article because big parts of this article are written on other peoples research. Many reliable sources are used to show "one side" of their view on the topic, there are also indications that organisations banned by US and EU are involved in providing their research on the movement.I am a strong supporter to have a stub on this topic , but im afraid that such articles on wikipedia have become mouthpieces for organisation which are known for disrupting peace (assassination of one of india's prime minister, twin bomb blast in New Delhi on the eve of Diwali) in Indian sub continent. This article requires your attention , please help. Anmol.2k4 18:31, 24 March 2006 (UTC)

sir im sorry about spamming,it wont happen again(i did that because i had no idea that so many people can be active at a time in wikipedia), as far as afd is concerned i am new to wikipedia and its rules so it was also a mistake. all i was trying to do was to get people's attention to this article especially Indians$admins and as many as possible. but sir don't you think this article has got POV problem and requires clean up. I hope you are going to take interest in this article because it is related to Indian people and Indian people have got proper knowledge on the subject. regards Anmol.2k4 11:45, 25 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Jacksum

Jonelo (talkcontribs) has reverted all my changes where I removed lots of links to Jacksum. I don't like to revert a revert, so if other editors such as yourself familiar with the situation could review their edits and do as you see fit that would be good. Thanks! — ciphergoth 08:16, 30 March 2006 (UTC)

Hmm... there are a lot more links to his own software than the ones you reverted. (And the user doesn't seem to have many other contributions.) All the links need to go. There's already been a discussion about this on their talk page. And the user has very strong feelings about this.
Conclusion: whoever wants to deal with the situation needs a lot of free time on their hands, which I don't have right now, sorry.
But if you were to, say, create a poll on whether or not there should be a zillion links to jacksum all over wikipedia, I would be happy to pitch in. Arvindn 13:16, 30 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Indian cryptography - help needed for British TV show!

Hi Arvind,

We are producing a code-breaking series for British TV called The Search. It's a little like Treasure Hunters on NBC in the USA but with more history and cryptography and fewer corporate sponsors!

In episode 2 we shall be filming in India, most likely Rajasthan. I'm currently trying to research as many examples of Indian cryptography as possible. Since it's primarily a history show, pre-war methods are more useful than modern ones. Can you suggest any good ones, or relevant works that i should read?

Many thanks,

Lucas Green The Search lucas.green@princesstv.com

=Nichalp «Talk»= 09:00, 25 November 2006 (UTC)

Hello Arvind,

I need help regarding the pages I created. I'm a follower of two spiritual organizations and was trying to create information about them. One is Dattapeetham, headed by Sri Ganapathi Sachchidananda Swamiji of Mysore and the other , World Teacher Trust, a newage philosphical and spirtual organization founded by Late Ekkirala Krishnamacharya. Both have world wide centers and lakhs of devotees. 1) I created an article on Ganapathi Sachchidananda , a spiritual leader and guru from Mysore. The article was later modified by someone who included copyright material. Admin Zoe deleted the article citing copyvio, which is understandable but he also said that Sri Swami was a non-notable person. When I created the article, Admin Deville agreed it was genuine. Please help me ....How can a swamiji who has Lakhs of followers and tours around the world every year be non-notable? I was wondering if you can undelete the article and revert it to the old version where it doesnt violate any copyrights. I couldnt ask admin Zoe because he seems not to agree about the notability. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ganapathi_Sachchidananda

2) Same issue with article on Master E.K.

Though I initially used copyrighted material and was trying to rewrite in my own words, Admin Zoe
deleted it every time. I can understand that. May be I have to use Ekkirala Krishnamcharya instead of Master E.K. But again I failed to convince Admin Zoe that he is a notable person. He protected the page Master E.K. Please help me on this..

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Master_E.K. I might have crossed the civility code by being a little bit rude to Admin Zoe because of the short time he gave to establish reasons for notability. But I believe these two spiritual gurus can fittingly have a bio on wikipedia, becuase they fit the "cult following" condition from wiki:bio code. Kindly help me on this and let me know if I'm missing something.

Thank you, Ramki
