[edit] Consensus to keep all tram stops?

Judging by the way this AfD seems to be going, I take it then that there might be consensus for keeping articles on tram stops simply because they are tram stops. Now, I for one can't see why tram stops should be considered notable enough to have their own Wikipedia articles, especially since AfD precedents explicitly states that bus stops are not notable (why should tram stops be then?). Should we start a WP:CENT about this? - ulayiti (talk) 17:07, 30 October 2005 (UTC)

Certainly not all tram stops are notable, especially on first-generation tramways, but on modern tramways with named stations, at least some are going to be as notable as a railway or metro station, and my view is that if any of the stations in a system are sufficient to have an article, we should allow all stations from that system to have one in the name of consistency - it would start to get ridiculous if we had constant arguments over which stations on a given line were major enough to have articles.
As for bus stops versus tram stations: tramways are by nature much less ephemeral than bus routes, and most modern tram stations involve at the very least dedicated platforms and possibly signals etc., whereas a bus stop is often just a metal plaque by the side of the road. But they - and especially this one - are not stations, they're directly comparable to bus stops. This one, as you can see from the link on the article page, is nothing more than a shelter by the street. It doesn't even seem to have an elevated kerb like tram stops here in Sheffield, which I think might possibly allow the bits of the street by the stop to be called 'platforms'. The only thing that can be written about tram stops like this is their location and which tram line they're on (if there's more than one, and in Nottingham there isn't). The service frequencies (which form the largest part of this article) are not encyclopaedic and not maintainable since they change.
Now, I agree that there might be some tram stops that are notable, for example if they're part of a railway station or if there's some interesting history connected to them, such as the 'hole in the road' on Castle Square in Sheffield being filled in and the square completely redone with the construction of the tramway, but we don't need an article about the tram stop to say that - the Castle Square article does a very good job in explaining the events, and since railway stations are inherently notable, the tram stop can be mentioned in an article about the station rather than it having its own article.
We seriously need to do something about these, or we'll drown in articles that say nothing more than 'X Street tram stop is a tram stop on X Street.' - ulayiti (talk) 16:54, 1 November 2005 (UTC)
