[edit] CVSNT
If you would like, I suggest you use the following subpages to prepare the articles you wish to write:
User:ArthurBarrett/CVSNT and User:ArthurBarrett/CVS Suite for the other. CVS Suite has not been deleted, it is only being considered for deletion as per our deletion policy. However, you may copy the text of the article to the subpage I just suggested and work on it there.
Second, please sign comments on Talk pages by using four tildes, as so: ~~~~.
Lastly, please be aware that we frequently have contributions that appear to be advertisements, and that articles which appear to heavily favor a certain type of software will not be looked upon favorably. You should seek to achieve a neutral tone and to verify the information that you provide from multiple sources. It would also help greatly if you coud demonstrate the the topic of the article is notable in some way, rather than simply trying to promote an obscure software. [edit] CVS / CVSNT etc etc
I'd like some help editing the entry for "Concurrent Versions System".
I'm writing to HELPME because I frankly dont know who else can explain a few things to me, so I appreciate any time you can spend sorting me out.
I e-mailed evilpheonix who I had previously corresponded with, and they got back to me briefly saying they'd look into it next time they are online - but I haven't heard anything since.
The "Concurrent Versions System" open source software is quite old, and there are many open source projects that could be considered "deriratives" or projects in their own right. I work for a company who sponsor one of these "CVSNT", and updating the Wiki pages to include either a little info about CVSNT on the CVS page or create a new page seems tricky.
I had one go - I added info to the "Limitations" section because there was already reference in there to how SVN has resolved some CVS problems. But that was removed as an advert, but subsequently WAN Disco have done the same thing. Now maybe someone will remove the WAN Disco stuff, but what about the SVN stuff? When is something an advert and when isn't it? I don't really want to go in and remove someone elses stuff just because someone removed mine...
Rather than make changes to the CVS page I've put comments in the Discuss page, but it doesn't appear that anyone reads it to comment on one way or anther. I've also created a draft CVSNT page as ArthurBarrett/CVSNT, and listed changes that I propose making to the CVS entry in the discuss page for ArthurBarrett/CVSNT.
Am I going about this the right way?
Thanks for your time and any help you can offer.
Thanks,
Arthur 04:34, 8 February 2006 (UTC)
- I think you are going about it the right way, but let's take this one step at a time. Does User:ArthurBarrett/CVSNT present different information than Concurrent Versions System? If so, move your new article to CVSNT - I can help you with that if you like.--Commander Keane 04:44, 8 February 2006 (UTC)

- Thanks for the help with this. Yes my CVSNT page User:ArthurBarrett/CVSNT talks only about CVSNT - not "CVS" and not specifically "concurrent versioning systems" so it present different information than Concurrent Versions System?. It's a little bare at the moment but has the basics for me (and hopefully others) to build on.

- I had previously created the entry in the "public area" but moved it at evilpheonix's suggestion. I just tried to move it back but I get this message:
- The page could not be moved: a page of that name already exists, or the name you have chosen is not valid. Please choose another name, or use Requested moves to ask an administrator to help you with the move.
- I had previously created the entry in the "public area" but moved it at evilpheonix's suggestion. I just tried to move it back but I get this message:
-
- The existing "CVSNT" page is simply a redirect:
- #redirect [[Concurrent Versions System]]
- The existing "CVSNT" page is simply a redirect:
-
- Can you help with that?
-
- Also is your e-mail link the best way to have this discussion or should I be putting this in my talk page?
-
- Thanks Arthur 06:07, 8 February 2006 (UTC)

- OK, I've done the move (an admin - me in this case - needed to delete the redirect before the move occurred). CVSNT now has all the info in it. The best way to discuss with me is on your talk page. Wikipedians generally only use the email to deal with blocks (since blocked users can't use talk pages) and sensitive information. I check my email twice a day, whereas I have your talk page on my watchlist - which I check upto 50 times a day. So this talk page is the best place for this conversation to take place.--Commander Keane 06:18, 8 February 2006 (UTC)

- Great - looks good! What's next? My suggested changes for the Concurrent Versions System page are listed in Talk:CVSNT and there is also a little discussion in Talk:Concurrent Versions System. I dont want to spam up the good Concurrent Versions System article however there are already similar references to other tools where appropriate in the article. Id prefer if someone other than me was responsible for deciding to continue the bloat or doing the pruning. I'm off home now so I'll check up tomorrow - thanks for all your help!

- Since I don't know anything about CVS, making content descisions for the encyclopedia is difficult for me. The mention of CVSNT in Concurrent Versions System seems fine to me as it is, but if you have some good ideas for changes go ahead and make them.--Commander Keane 05:27, 15 February 2006 (UTC)
