San Antonio’s premiere contemporary art venue, Artpace hosts artists from around the globe through its residency and exhibition programs and provides innovative educational offerings that emphasize how art can reflect and affect our world. Named “the cream” of artist residencies by The New York Times, Artpace is housed in an 18,000 square foot facility renovated by the eminent San Antonio firm Lake/Flato Architects. The 1920’s building, once a Hudson automobile dealership, is located in the vibrant downtown cultural district, one block from San Antonio's famous River Walk.

Artpace San Antonio, an internationally recognized contemporary art venue with strong Texas roots, is known for its distinctive programming. Since its opening in 1995, Artpace San Antonio has served as a laboratory for the creation and advancement of international contemporary art. Artpace believes that art is a dynamic social force that inspires individuals and defines cultures. Our residencies, exhibitions, and education programs nurture the creative expression of emerging and established artists, while actively engaging youth and adult audiences.

To date more than 120 artists from around the globe have participated in our residency program, many of whom have gone on to achieve international acclaim. In 2004 alone, 13 Artpace fellows were represented in the Whitney Biennial, and most recently, Jeremy Deller was awarded the prestigious Turner Prize for a work created during a 2003 residency at Artpace.

Extending the impact of these exhibitions and our visiting artists, Artpace offers a wide range of public programs for students and adults that emphasize how art can reflect and affect contemporary society. Each year our education programs reach thousands of visitors, including over 6,000 students enrolled in our multiple-exposure programs. We currently serve 140 K-12 schools and organizations in Bexar County and the surrounding areas offer programs to 22 colleges and universities.
