Arthur Timothy Read is the title character of the PBS children's television series Arthur, which was created by Marc Brown. On the show, he is an eight year old in third grade, and lives in Elwood city.

[edit] Arthur's appearance
Arthur is recognizable by his furry light brown head, the trademark yellow sweater, blue jeans, and gym shoes that he wears in most episodes. Occasionally on formal events, he can be seen wearing a tuxedo featuring a blue coat, white shirt, blue slacks, brown shoes, and a red bowtie. In the early books, Arthur was drawn like an aardwark -- oblong pointed nose. Later, his face was almost a circular shape.

Throughout the series, Arthur is constantly pestered by his four-year old sister D.W, which stands for Dora Winifred. Much of the time, D.W. tries to get Arthur into trouble. For instance, in the episode "Flaw and Order" D.W. videotaped Arthur and Buster while they were playing in the kitchen. At the same time glass is shattered making it appear as if Arthur is to blame for breaking it.
Arthur's parents are his mother Jane Read, who works as an accountant, and his father David Read, who runs a catering business. He also has a baby sister named Kate and a dog named Pal. Appearances from Arthur's extended family include Grandma Thora, Grandpa Dave, Uncle Fred, Uncle Richard, Aunt Jessica, Aunt Loretta, Aunt Lucy, Great-Grandma---Thora's mother---and his cousins Cora, Monique, Ricky, and some other unnamed cousins.

Buster Baxter is considered to be Arthur's best friend. Arthur's other friends include Francine Frensky, Muffy Crosswire, Alan "The Brain" Powers, Binky Barnes, Sue Ellen Armstrong, Fern Walters, George Nordgren, Jenna Morgan, and Prunella Neville.

Arthur attends third grade at Lakewood Elementary School and his teacher is Mr. Ratburn. The principal of his school is Mr. Herb Haney. Other school staff members that Arthur knows include Mrs. Sarah MacGrady, the lunch lady, and Mr. Morris, the janitor.

- Arthur's eyes in the first season (mainly seen in the first episode Arthur's Eyes) are shown to be regular drawn eyes, similar to Buster, D.W., etc. But in the second season, his eyes were changed to dots instead.
- Arthur's birthday is May 25.
- In the first Arthur book Arthur's Nose, he had a nose like an actual aardvark.
- The theme tune for Arthur was sung by Ziggy Marley (Bob Marley's son).
