Arthur Sheehan
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Arthur Sheehan was a well known baseball player for the San Francisco Triple A League back in the early 1940s. Born in San Francisco, California 1924, to Arthur Sheehan Sr. and Gladys Larson, Arthur quickly developed an interest in sports. However, he started school a year later than most kids, so he had to wait before he could play any sports.

[edit] Sports career
When Arthur made it to middle school, he joined the basketball and baseball teams. He was an immediate success. He was known throughout the city as an all star pitcher for the Gallileo High School baseball team and a great basketball player. After a losing streak from their last pitcher, he helped lead the team to victory by winning the championship three years running from 1941-1943. He often had his own articles in the San Francisco Chronicle, making it to the Triple A League.
[edit] Military
Many thought he could make the professional league, and surely would have, but in 1943, he was drafted into the U.S. military. He later made it to the Air Corps and was promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant. In 1944, while flying on an Air Fortress over Germany, the right wing caught fire, and before the crew could evacuate, the fortress exploded. The navigator and bomber survived using parachutes. The two pilots died in their chairs, the gunner (Arthur Sheehan) was missing, and the four others had died. Arthur's death was mourned and it was wondered if he would have made professional baseball. He was posthumously put into the San Francisco Hall of Fame.
