Arthur Banks

Arthur Banks GC (b October 6, 1923 in Llandulas, Abergele, North Wales); Attended St Edward's School (Oxford) and was a student at the time of his enlistment to the RAF in 1942. He was in 112 Squadron, Desert Air Force, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. He was shot down in Northern Italy on August 29 1944, whilst there he managed to join a partisans group (the Boccato group). During the following months he 'became an outstanding figure, advising and encouraging them in action against the enemy'.[1]. In December 1944 he was captured by the Germans, he was very brutally tortured by his captors but still gave no information, he was eventually shot in the head.
He was awarded the George Cross posthumously for his courage and endurance.
