Art Houtteman

Arthur Joseph Houtteman (b. August 7, 1927, Detroit, Michigan – d. May 6, 2003, Rochester Hills, Michigan) was a pitcher in Major League Baseball. He played twelve seasons in the American League with the Detroit Tigers (1945-1953), Cleveland Indians (1953-1957), and Baltimore Orioles (1957).

At 17 years in age, Houtteman debuted as the youngest player in the American League in the 1945 season and was also the youngest player in the 1946 season. By 1950, he was an All-Star with the Tigers.

That season, Houtteman led the league in shutouts (4), was second in games started (34), and won 19 games with a 3.54 ERA. In the 1954 World Series with the Indians, he pitched two innings in one game against the New York Giants. In 325 career games, Houtteman pitched 1555 innings and posted a won-loss record of 87-91, with 78 complete games, 14 shutouts, and a 4.14 ERA.

Houtteman died in Rochester Hills, Michigan, aged 75, in 2003.
